Hi I’m looking to start an AOS army as a side project to my 40K force while I wait for releases and also to improve my painting skill. also because I like the idea of having both at my disposal if I feel like a change of pace .
I have tried a few times and have tried the following
Stormcast ( I just find them to similar to my main force space marines)
Slaves to darkness ( not sure why I haven’t finished painting these guys just stoped though my scheme is just metal and fur)
Sylvaneth (were too dam slow for me)
Not sure which direction I want to go in I know I like my cavelry and the two options I would have gone have been axed (bretonia as I kinda liked the idea of a mish mash of different houses) and tomb kings as I rember being enamoured with a guys army when I was younger ) and if my tastes in 40K are anything to go by I like speed. Though not having to paint hordes would be a bonus
Not much to go on but hopefully some of you guys that know the system will have a better idea

If you like cavalry and liked of Brets then go Cities of Sigmar, you can even use old Bret models for them (just re-base them as the DemiGryphs are on larger Cav bases). They have evereything too, Magic, Cav, Shooting, tanks, w/e you want. If you like TK well the closest is OBR (Ossiarch Bonereapers) they are tanky large skeletons with Cav and trebs. So there are 2 solid options for you. Look at the models and try to watch a BatRep before buying.

If you want cavalry playstyle, Idoneth Deepkin have one of the hardest-hitting cavalry in the game in terms of point/cost ratio, and while they're not bretonia, they have the same feeling of knights on mounts (fish in this case) and serfs/thrall infantry to mop up/ fill the ranks.

But they aren't fish they are eels - EELS
On other news if you like cavalry and you did like skeletons then you could consider Ossiach Bonereapers. They have Deathriders which are a pretty hard hitting cavalry unit and you can even form an entire cavalry army of Deathriders and their Liege Kavalos leaders. It might lack some elements being so focused, but you can still get down a good number of cavalry and have some additional support.

Going to take a look into the bonereapers as i personally don’t like the look of the eels / sharks although the riders and standard guys do look cool.

Bretonians & Tomb Kings DO have rules in AoS....
Kinda crappy rules, & you have to do some digging to find them on GWs site though. I can't find them atm, but I'm sure some one could link you to them.
A bit further updated in Generals Handbook 2018(? Or was it '19?).

The thing is they are both legends armies. So they won't get updates; won't get any new modes and don't even have any (or at least many as some brets might have survived in cities of sigmar) for sale. So they are passion projects. There IS Warhammer Old World coming back, but we have no idea when that is going to happen and GW even said it was at least 3 years away before Corona; plus we've no idea what time point or factions will appear.

Like I said, kinda crappy rules.
On being Legends - may or may not matter. Depends upon who/where the OP plays.
On models not being for sale - pfft.
Theres this thing called the internet. Every model in their lists is readily available. You just buy them from everyone but GW. And thats just for the official models.
Passion project? Well it IS a hobby....

I haven't really played a game of AoS just yet as I'm still new to it, but I just chose what I like the look of! I'm not really competitive though, so I don't mind losing.. just like to have fun really haha
Do you want a faction for how they look or are you more interested in something stronger in-game?

I’d rather go for what I’d like to paint but nothing really jumps at me . And generally if I go for astetics I end up with an army that couldn’t fight it’s way out of a wet paper bag . All I really know is I don’t want to do stormcast (I have a ton of older sets and kits lying around) and would like some variation in the models.
I’m currently looking at battleline units so see what I like. Rather than my previous ohh those terrorghiests and zombie dragons are cool I’ll go grislegore approach. I’m lucky I had some ghouls and horrors lying around from blood bowl conversions to test and yeah there beasts look epic but there rank and file suck to paint .

Did you have any liking to any of the older WHFB armies? Any other kind of fantasy theme you can think of? A lot of the time you can change the theme around certain models or paint/build them differently. Maybe you could find some wiggle room there!

Yeah I did but they got axed , although looking at some stuff and the undead I prefer to paint/look at I’m doing reasearch in to legion of blood. With a deathrattle / vampire split and maybe 2 terrorghiests and a vamp on dragon .

What are you looking for? Elite and fast? Ogors are fast and elite. Also their cavalry are pretty big and nasty too. If you go on foot, they get +2 M when not in combat and are as fast as most infantry at M8. If in combat, they get +2 Bravery. When they charge, you can do mortal wounds too. If it's over 8 Ogors, then it's MWs on a 4+. If you go for their cavalry, their Stornhorn ignore wounds on a 5+ and can dish out 20+ wounds on the charge.
Another option is Seraphon as there are many ways to play them. They can be fast, hard hitting, or sneaky. Just depends on how many saurus or skink you field. Some of the saurus builds are tough and some have nasty cavalry and monsters.
Orcs have speed too. They can move across the table and do a turn 1 charge if you need too. Just get a couple start collecting boxes with the gore gruntas. The drummer is essential for speed!
OBR are new so they are still getting hit by the nerf bat so expect changes.

The just attached a list of viable warscrolls in the GH2020 designer's commentary yesterday. Pretty sure those are officially out of the ruleset now.
Amusingly the FW chaos dwarf Legion of Azgorh are still on the OK list.

Here's a question for you that might help. What army/s do you play in 40k, and would you prefer an army that plays/looks similar or completely different?
