Today, Renegade Game Studios announced an extension to its partnership with Hasbro to produce games for the hobby market. In addition to more games featuring the Power Rangers brand, Renegade will produce card and roleplaying games for Transformers, My Little Pony and G.I. Joe brands. “Hasbro has brought so much joy to fans through these worlds filled with rich narratives and iconic characters. We are excited to expand our relationship with Hasbro to help bring these stories to hobby tabletops in a new way,“ explains Scott Gaeta, President and Publisher at Renegade Game Studios.

The partnership between the two companies began with Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid, a tactical miniatures board game that launched in 2018. “I was approached by Saban [the previous owners of the Power Ranger IP],” said Gaeta, “about making a tabletop Power Rangers game for adult fans of Power Rangers. Not a children’s game, but something for fans who grew up with it in the 90’s. Before the game was released, Hasbro acquired Saban and we started working with Hasbro. We put Heroes of the Grid out and it was a hit. Hasbro has been wonderful to work with. I’ve worked with pretty much every studio. I was a little worried at first, but they’ve been absolutely phenomenal.”
“We’re thrilled to expand our relationship with Renegade Game Studios to include more fan favorite brands from our portfolio,” said Casey Collins, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Global Consumer Products at Hasbro. “The tabletop and roleplaying games Renegade Game Studios innovated for the Power Rangers franchise have proved to authentically connect with both gamers and the Ranger Nation and we are confident that G.I. Joe, Transformers and My Little Pony fans will love the exciting games coming soon.”

Renegade looks to put out two major styles of games in their partnership. The first will be deckbuilding games, where players construct a deck from a common pool to win the game. “We wanted to do something that would appeal to gamers but also to someone who is a fan of the show,” said Gaeta, “and those are going to be deck building games. We really like deckbuilding games. They are a nice middle ground that doesn’t take up the bandwidth of a collectible card game but they scratch a similar gameplay itch. We have a series of deck building games in the works based on all the different brands.”

The other major game initiative brings these settings into tabletop roleplaying games. As Transformers, My Little Pony, Power Rangers and G.i. Joe are Hasbro properties, which also owns Dungeons & Dragons, it’s no surprise that the RPGs created by Renegade Game Studios will use the massively popular Fifth Edition rules set.

“Part of the strategy here is that if we want a GI Joe fan to play an RPG” said Gaeta. “We want to use the system that’s most common and widely known. Fifth Edition at this point is the common language in RPGs. We went back and forth on our discussions but we landed on Fifth Edition being what we wanted to use to achieve our design goals.”

This also allows for the cross-brand crossovers seen in comics where GI JOE and the Autobots team up to battle Cobra and the Decepticons. “There’s nothing to stop players from having GI Joe and Transformers characters in the same campaign,” said Gaeta.

The games announced today are expected to be released sometime next year. For now, fans will also be able to enjoy entirely new websites that Renegade will be launching this fall to support the communities for its line-up of Hasbro games. Organized play, achievements, and in-store and at home events will be added to current programs, such as the current Power Rangers free monthly scenarios and Morphin’ Monday’s Twitch programs.

“The partnership with Hasbro has really been great,” said Gaeta, “we’re excited about these new brands that I’ve been chasing for over a decade. It’s really nice to be finally doing some fun stuff with them.”

Almost as if we were back in 2000, yeah, what with all the new games using the D&D system and all.

Is 5th edition conducive to modern and scifi gaming? 3e SRD was.a bit clunky in that regard IMO.

Yeah. Fun that all these things are getting games. Bad that it's DnD with a different paint job. DnD might be the most popular but it's also just not a great game.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

There's speculation that this is the reason that they cancelled the Transformer TCG from WotC, or at least part of the reason.

No. D&D in general is rather poor when it comes to modern and sci-fi. I can't think of an edition that wasn't (and 1st edition had rules for bringing in/converting Gamma World and Boot Hill characters)

The leveling and skill systems tends to be poor fits (though that can depend on taste to some degree), but unless you really like RPGs to mirror bullet-sponge boss fights from video games [but for all fights], gunplay will always feel bizarrely trivial and low impact.
Its one thing to hack at a dragon with a pointy bit of metal for a while, but suspension of disbelief gets defeated faster than the enemies when someone just 'walks off' a sniper round to the noggin.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Thanks. Yeah, I have no experience with 5e but I've foudn 3e in all its variations (up to and including my current ongoing Starfinder campaign experience) didn't really do the scifi/modern genre justice. Things that didn't bother me even a bit (like HP sponge enemies) in the original fantasy setting didn't gel in scifi. Firing a future laser gating gun using mostly the same mechanics in game as a longbow just doesn't do it for me. I don't know if that will carry over to this 5e scifi setting though.

Ugh, yeah. Starfinder actively infuriates me at pretty much every design decision except the 6th level cap on spellcasting.

You can tell that several of the key designers were former WotC employees that worked on Star Wars d20 and Alternity. All the bad decisions there were just copy/pasted into Starfinder, with a few new ones to boot (like the nonsense about extra actions to change your grip on your weapon to reload)

This! So much this!

I would love to play a GI Joe RPG, but there is no way I can think of that would make it fun using D&D 5E (or even 3E) as a base. It really a non-d20 system in my mind.

Or transformers. Wtf classes are you going to give me that make any sense in transformers in a dnd context? What the hell is leveling up going to be like? This is going to be terrible.

Hopefully they look at what's worked in the past. Transformers War For Cybertron the video game broke down classes into Defender (Tank), Soldier (Dmg dealer), Scout (mobility), and Scientist (Healing) and Leader (Defender, Buffer). It was pretty balanced, and most importantly a ton of fun!

Translating those initial concepts to D20 mechanics shouldn't be too tough, and subclasses might revolve around alt forms. I'd expect it to be very map dependent, because it needs to be much more mobile than a bunch of demihumans running around a dungeon.

Yikes. Map dependent is tripping over a huge hurdle for 5e. The WotC devs don't like large maps or large engagement ranges, they've avoided the concepts like holy water for the last decade (4e and 5e both, and SW Saga, which was a 3e/4e hybrid)
Encounter design is really pushed to happening at knife range. Double movement distance between enemies is really rare- the expectation generally is you'll be able to move and melee round one.
The game just doesn't cope with long range or fast movement at all. The best you'll get is a change of scale on the maps (1 square =50' rather than 5')

Role-wise, a lot of those are discarded concepts that didn't make it into 5e. Mobility especially is a huge problem for the system, as 'kiting' is generally seen as degenerative gameplay. More generally, once the combat music starts playing, you're either killing fools are you aren't helping. The math constraints (bounded accuracy) don't allow for tanks in any meaningful sense, and monster design is a one-size fits all where trying to out-heal incoming damage just isn't possible- the only time to waste resources on healing is when someone goes down, and you just pop them back up in full fighting trim with the lowest resource & action cost you can manage (usually level 1 healing word). Buffs typically have 'concentration' as the limiter, meaning only one per caster, and it goes down as soon as they get smacked and fail a check.

Plus video game implementations don't tend to translate well to PnP- they can do more complex mechanics behind the scenes that don't interfere with the players, while and PnP game would need to crank it all out by hand at each stage of the encounter.

----
Unless they do a _lot_ of work to move away from 5e assumptions, I can't figure how Transformers D&D would work.
Seriously, between flight, movement and lasers. Decepticons win. Always win. Its the old horse archer problem (pegasus variant) from 3e. If you aren't playing in a dungeon, speed + ranged attack (+ flight) = you win.
If they go inside where they can't be attacked, you take what you want from outside (and/or burn the building down), then just leave and do something else.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

This is just touching on some of the surface reasons why dnd sucks as an actual game.

DnD and guns never really works and transformers is at least 50% guns.

What a nightmare this is going to be.

At least with Giant Robots, getting hit with a Laser Cannon in the face may not insta-kill you.

Now, let's talk about the GI Joe version of 5E. How do you talk off getting hit with a full-auto burst from a machine gun and whoever you hit NOT dying?

At least in Shadowrun you have Cyberware, Bioware, and Magic. What about in GI Joe? Pulp Plot Armor saves you?

Oh wait, if they base it on the cartoon no one will actually hit anything anyway.

Have you ever actually watched the 80s GI Joe cartoon? It basically is modern warfare D&D with people constantly walking away/parachuting/crawling out of destroyed vehicles; every episode has mass vehicular and environmental carnage with zero actual casualties due to its status as a kid's cartoon. The default antipersonnel setting for every weapon is set permanently to nerf which meshes pretty well with D&D 2nd through 4th though I can't speak about 5th myself.

More importantly G.I. Joe is almost entirely crazy ass vehicles. Is every player going to be inside of some kind of helicopter or jet or tank or hover craft or jet pack?

When they are not and the enemy shows up then what happens?

...do you guys have any experience with the G.I. Joe comics? I mean... yes, the Sunbow TV series is as it is, but it's not exactly the only or the definitive version of the joes ^^. Same with Transformers, too.

I mean, even in cartoons, you also have Resolute:

Sssshhh. They're haters. I'm really looking forward to running something like Last Stand of the Wreckers.

My highest hope for GiJoe is that it is Streetfighter STG with guns. Which would be amazingly fun.

If you really want the proper game for the Sunbow series, or for the oldie He-Man/She-Ra series, Cartoon Action Hour is on its third edition already, and it's a pretty damn good game for that.

Apparently, you missed my last sentence.

I actually do not see an issue with a class system in a GI Joe style setting. Almost all of their "File Cards" on ht eback of the figures had a primary and secondary specialty. These could easily provide bonuses.

I have no doubt that a transformers RPG COULD be done. It's d20 I don't trust to do it in any way that makes for a satisfying experience. Same for all the other properties in this thread. D20 is notoriously terrible whenever it steps out of it's dungeon crawling roots (And I don't think it's particularly great at that either).

kind of pleased I suppose , not too fussed about deck building games ( although do enjoy them) not massively keen on the use of 5th for the rpgs ( largely for the reasons stated above) either. Does it bring us one step closer to my dream of a transformers war game though? ....... probably not :(
