Subject: New Generic Stratagem - "Squadron"

Squadron -2CP
Before deploying, select one unit which would normally be split up after deployment. This unit is not split up after deployment, and remains one unit for the duration of the game.
Now, the premise is basic - usually you split your 3 dreads up, now you keep them as a unit. Is there anything which would become broken from this, that you can think of?
For Orks, the units affected would be:
Buggies
Deff Dreads
Mek Guns
And the main things which would increase in power is stratagems, like more dakka. I don't think that putting more dakka on a unit of buggies instead of just 1 outweighs the fact that the enemy can shoot the unit instead of the individual models, nor the much reduced mobility. 3 dreads with more dakka and visions in the smoke, with 4 kustom mega blastas each, is about as abusive as I can get, and once again it makes them a single unit so easier to focus on and less maneuvrable.
Can anyone think of any unit that would be broken for using this?

IG has a lot of vehicles that would stay in 3 model units and increase the effectiveness of certain stratagems significantly.
Just from a quick glance:
Crush them, Aerial spotter (reroll all hits for an artillery unit), defensive gunners, vengance for Cadia, Firstborn pride (+1 to hit for a unit of Leman Russ or Manticore sounds nice), Ambush
It would also tripple the effectiveness of our defensive psyker powers by allowing to give for example 3 Leman Russ Tanks -1 to be hit and +1sv.

Whats the coherence distance for the various units like this?

I can't see why it wouldn't still be 2". It might be a pain for bigger vehicles, but that's the price you pay!
I can see how imperial guard may break this. maybe it would have to be more expensive for different units...

You could "save" it for IG by rewording the problematic stratagems to read "one model" instead of "one unit" and clarify for the psychic powers that they target "either one vehicle model or one non-vehicle unit". The only thing loosing out would be the few vehicle squads that do not split, as our Infantry never splits anyway, so Sentinels and Tauri (both models, so the assault car and Venator, but they will likely go to legends or disappear at all).
Edit: to clarify: I mean as of now Sentinel Squads are the only vehicle unit that comes to mind where more than 1 model profits from stratagems like "Crush them", which is balanced, as buffing a single Sentinel would be much worse than a single LR. But buffing up to three is roughly in the same ballpark.
If you change the stratagems to only effect one vehicle model, this would go away and nerf Sentinels a bit.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if stratagems were changed to only affect one unit, why would you ever want to squadron up?
As far as I can tell the only point of this squadron rule would be to allow you to get a stratagem onto multiple models simultaneously, at the cost of being more vulnerable to enemy fire (wounds go on the same vehicle regardless of which one can be seen, wounds spill over when one vehicle dies) and highly restricted in your mobility.

You protect the first of the three tanks, with +1 to save and master mechanic, and then the enemy has 2 tanks they can't shoot. Its the same broken crap that happens when you fire a melta gun at a squad of deathwatch and it always happens to be pointed at the one guy with a storm shield.

Rather than making this a general stratagem, would it perhaps be easier to just give some units a sort of Combat Squad rule on a case-by-case basis? That way, you can control who does and doesn't have access to the option to remain squadded up, and you don't bring CP into the matter. Plus, it forces/allows you to consider if squadding up is too powerful on a unit-by-unit basis.
|
ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

For actualy broken things, T'au immediately come to mind with their drones.
What do you do with a mixed-toughness unit? Unlike previous editions, the core rules don't handle such a situation anymore. Also what happens with their keywords, do you combine them together?
What about Saviour Protocols?.

Tyranid carnifexes and deff dreads would probably benefit in some way.
