iv read some basics on 9th edition, but really curious how hard it is to get -1 to hit from terrain, this would be a huge disadvantage if I decide to build ork and they only hitting on 6's in shooting

The only terrain that grants -1 to hit is Dense Cover, which by "default" includes Woods, Industrial Structures and Ruined Walls.

You need to define what traits each terrain piece has before the game, so it totally depends on what your battlefield is.

It is very dependent on how a particular table is set up. However, as a rough guideline, I would suggest that it would be unusual for an opponent to be able to hide more than two or three units at most on an 'average' game board.

Also, its on a model to model basis. Its possible that half the unit doesnt get the -1 to hit, but the other does.

That's ... wow, so if you shoot 30 times with your punisher gatling, at an ork unit half in -1 and half not, do you first resolve hits to see if you kill all the covered ones and then the misses that could have been hits suddenly return when you do?

Seems a pain to track.

No, that's not what he means. A Punisher will either be -1 to hit or not.

What he means is that, if you have 10 Intercessors, 5 of which have a clear line of sight to at least 1 model in the target unit, and 5 don't, and thus are affected by the Dense Cover, the 5 clear LOS won't have -1 to hit and the 5 without will have -1 to hit.

its just when you have a BS of 5+ ur basically losing half your shooting to units being -1 to hit, which is of course a huge deal, id probably be playing 40k by now but las vegas has almost no 40k gaming scene, might move soon and if I do I plan on playing grey knights, orcs, or imperial guard

It's worth remembering thta Orks have the "More Dakka" stratagem which makes natural 5's and 6's to hit always succeed, and generate more hits, so this can mitigate any -1 to hit, such as moving or shooting through terrain or at fliers, provided the shooting unit isn't in a transport (or are gretchin!). So there are work-arounds for us greenskins!
