I noticed today that GW have removed the FAQs relating to the Index books that were released at the start of 8th edition. There are *some* (not many) units that didn't get an updated data sheet, and didn't get put into Legends.

Is there an authoritative source that invalidates the book wholesale? I am aware that if a unit has a newer datasheet that you should be using that, but I'm talking about content that doesn't fit that bill.

I remember seeing somewhere that they were not applicable to 9th edition but can't find that either.

Out of interest what units were you talking about?

My understanding was,
Rules but no model = legends
model but no rules = unplayable limbo

Just because the FAQs are gone it doesn't mean the books aren't valid, but afaik there are only three datasheets that don't have valid replacements (Big Mek, Sky Slashers, Shrikes).

Indexes are very much in a "kludge" territory where you'll need to agree with your opponent how to handle them.

Its not the books being gone thats the issue. The books were removed over a year ago and at that time they said that they were phasing out the indexes because everyone has codexes. Its the fact that the FAQ's are gone now too.

Obviously in your own games you can agree anything with your opponent. From my point of view in any matched play game I would disallow it and it probably wouldn't be valid in any tournament.

To the OP,
there is no official statement anywhere I can find so you could try writing to the rules team through their generic rules feedback email.

I have heard that the big mek model will receive something in the next codex but the other units are just stuck in limbo.

There's been no legal way to use indexes since legends came at which point the flowchart was completely removed. You use newest book unless you have permission to use older. Flowchart gave you permission to use index in certain cases. Flowchart was removed december 2019. Index has been illegal since then. They are about as valid as 2012 codex.
