So I'm considering selling some 40K and reinvesting in Legion. The problem is, when I go to the FF site to look at the models, nearly all of their pictures are like 200 X 200 images. You can't see any of the model detail!

Does anyone have some better images, maybe even some stuff you've painted?

Yeah, FFG's store pictures are inexplicably poor. When I want a better look at stuff I look through the articles linked at the bottom of the store pages. There's usually an announcement article and a more in depth article about the unit that have better pictures, and more recently also a 360° view.

All the Legion models I've painted to date are in my showcase thread, in case that helps:

I had a total meltdown about this recently. Never have I seen a company market a figure that so completely lied to me about its quality.

What they sold me:

The best I have seen on dakka are by AAN;

Lots of 3rd party stuff as well but he has done pretty much all of the core CW stuff.
I have some badly painted and photo'd CIS in my gallery as well.

There are no photos in that link. They must have removed them from the site.

So I'm not expecting 40K quality, I'm mostly just trying to see stuff like "hight" general look, I wish I could see how complex the kits are to build. That sort of thing. I did find a couple battle reports on Youtube that didn't look too bad.

The photos are there for me, linked from his blog.
The kits are all pretty easy to build, the core clones are pvc as is dooku all other kits are hips. B1 Droids are a little bit fiddly as are destroyers (the wheeled ones are a nightmare).

Why are they a nightmare?

Very fiddly, small connection points and not great instructions. They are however totally unneeded as they act as little more than a token (and a cardboard one is provided).

Man, FF really does have a token fetish don't they?

I gotta say, so far the one downside I see to the game is the weird measuring tool. I was hoping it'd just have a measuring tape like 40K.

Yes, FFG love their tokens and special dice. The measuring tool does take a bit of getting used to and can be a right pain for some vehicles (they have notched bases that the tool needs to fit into) but it does prevent shenanigans largely.

I took a photo that will hopefully help you get an impression of the size/scale of the models:

Some additional info. Standard infantry bases are sold as 27mm bases (bottom circumference) and offer the same 25mm space on top that you know from 40k 25mm bases. At 3mm height, the bases are vastly taller and look the part. For myself I can say that you get used to it, and I tend to like bases the flatter they are.

Both models are PVC, which is the case for the overwhelming majority of infantry models for Rebels and Empire that have only in the last few months started receiving hard plastic infantry (such as Clan Wren, Inferno Squad and a character (each?) ) Republic hast most of its infantry kits in PVC but will eventually have a relatively larger portion of its army in plastic because the switch is happening so close after the release of the Clone Wars factions and only the starter set and a bit are in PVC. Future releases should be in plastic. Separatists are in a much better position still with most of their stuff in plastic. I'm not entirely familiar with the range so someone should correct me, but I think only Dooku is in PVC.

In addition to this, all vehicles are in plastic, albeit with PVC crewmen for the older kits.

PVC troopers are dead easy to assemble, consisting of a body, helmet and matching arms with shaped pegs that lock you into a pose. I find mold removal on PVC nasty, but that may just be me and FFG use a fairly hard PVC, which makes it feel a little better than you average board game PVC.

I can't speak for the Separatists as it's the one faction I don't have, but plastic kits have not been bad or fiddly for me. All my vehicles had good fit on their parts except for the BARC that leaves you guessing just how you should fit a bit or two. I believe that was the gunner's footrest and a connection piece between the speeder and sidecar, but it's been a while. Personally I can't confirm Ingtaer's assessment of the assembly instructions. They come with the usual pictures and (occasionally?) accompanying text, so I've not had any trouble myself.

I guess that's just the modern gaming world. On the bright side, the tools you actually need are the movement tools. The measuring stick is simply four segments that are 6" in length each. Everyone I know uses a tape measure instead of it.

There's no real way around the movement tools, but I find that little hassle as you only use it on your squad leader. You don't measure for every trooper separately but move the squad leader with the tool and place the rest of the squad in coherency.
