Just getting into the game and haven't played a game yet. But I have these minis and can start playing games but I need some suggestions. Firstly, I have no idea which (if any) trainings are helpful/actually used. Same for other things like grenades, gear, armaments etc. So essentially, what I need is help filling out the rest of the list.
Point total 767/800
Director Orson Krennic (90 + 10 = 100)
--Esteemed Leader (5), Commanding Presence (5)
Shoretroopers (52 + 45 = 97)
--T-21B Trooper (32), Shoretrooper (13)
Shoretroopers (52 + 45 = 97)
--T-21B Trooper (32), Shoretrooper (13)
Shoretroopers (52 + 45 = 97)
--T-21B Trooper (32), Shoretrooper (13)
Imperial Death Troopers (76 + 34 = 110)
--DLT-19D Trooper (34)
Scout Troopers (60 + 28 = 88)
--DLT-19x Sniper (28)
TX-225 GAVw Occupier Combat Assault Tank (155 + 23 = 178)
--First Sergeant Arbmab (5), DLT-19 Rifle Pintle (18)

I would definitely be taking the mortars with the shores, they are fantastic and also up your activation count. Would also put Recon Intel on the snipers as they want to deploy as far forward as possible (note they no longer have infinite range if you have an old card). Offensive push is great on Death Troopers.
Not sure at all on the Occupier, as a delivery vehicle for a unit of flaming snows (or Vader) it can be okay but it will generally struggle to be worth it.

Why is a high activation count desirable?

It gives you more options. Also as the game is moving units alternately you can use your less worthwhile activations to bait traps, make the enemy use their higher value units first and a lot of missions revolve around the number of units on an objective where if you have more you win.

I thought that was the logic.
Doesn't this also kind of work against you in some scenarios? If I am essentially passing on some turns to see what my opponent does with their more elite units, aren't I also leaving my elite units to be reactionary? I get that no strategy is foolproof, I just feel like sinking points into having more units sacrifices more for quantity than quality.
My thought with the tank over mortars was that the tank is more likely to produce more casualties and provide some moving cover.
I guess my strategy was to be aggressively pressing the attack.
Again, I haven't even played the game yet, so I don't know what works and what doesn't :-(

If you were just passively doing nothing with those activations then sure, however with the shore's mortars you would be taking an aim and combining its fire with another unit to make it much deadlier. Many people use sniper scout strike teams as initiative sinks, they are surprisingly durable (always hide the non sniper out of line of sight, that way it cant be killed and gives the unit heavy cover) and still have utility in plinking damage off things (force users hate them) and giving suppression to things they shoot.
Armour is a tricky thing to use, the fire power it generates is okay and its survivability is okay. Come up against a list with lots of impact or critical (like most forceweilders) and the tank will not last long.
It seems like most Imperial players at the moment try to keep the enemy at range 3-4 where they have the advantage.
Having said that though the most important thing to do is to try stuff out and see what works for you. When playing your first games though make sure there is plenty of terrain on the table! Legion games really need it.

Ahh! I see. I guess I misunderstood the Frie Support rule and thought it would need line of sight to use. I'm assuming from your response it doesn't?
I've read that spamming snipers can make you an undesirable opponent to play against. I don't want that, I want a good mix of competitive and fun. Plus, I only have one support slot left, so I'm thinking another squad of Death Troopers? Also, while not exactly snipers, it seems the Imperial units do have considerable range like you say.
Here is a infantry/gun line list with the Death Troopers and Mortars subbed for the Tank, but I'm still 23 points shy. Any other potentially useful upgrades I could use?
Director Orson Krennic (90 + 10 = 100)
--Strict Orders (5), Commanding Presence (5)
Shoretroopers (52 + 45 = 97)
--T-21B Trooper (32), Shoretrooper (13)
Shoretroopers (52 + 45 = 97)
--T-21B Trooper (32), Shoretrooper (13)
Shoretroopers (52 + 45 = 97)
--T-21B Trooper (32), Shoretrooper (13)
DF-90 Mortar Trooper (36 + 0 = 36)
DF-90 Mortar Trooper (36 + 0 = 36)
DF-90 Mortar Trooper (36 + 0 = 36)
Imperial Death Troopers (76 + 38 = 114)
--DLT-19D Trooper (34), Offensive Push (4)
Imperial Death Troopers (76 + 38 = 114)
--DLT-19D Trooper (34), Offensive Push (4)
Scout Troopers (Strike Team) (20 + 30 = 50)
--DLT-19x Sniper (28), Recon Intel (2)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Another quick question, as far as force users go, with the gun line list, what would be the best strategy for dealing with force users? I feel like those particular units are going to be a struggle without a force user to tie them up in a duel.

No, you are right that the mortar still needs to follow all of the rules of shooting when using fire support (must be in range, arc and LOS).
Strike teams are seen as a little bit cheesy for sure, they generally are not a no fun experience but yeah best to avoid spamming them!
I like that list a lot better, I would highly recommend putting the E11D on both Death Trooper units, it extends their range to 4 and gives them suppressive which is very handy (remember that card has to be tapped to be used though). The remaining points though i have no idea, if you have Vital Assets then maybe just use them as a bit to insure you get to play with your own cards for defining the battle field.
Force users can be a tricky prospect, generally it is advisable to only shoot them when they do not have a dodge token and try to eliminate them at range. If they get close they will quickly delete units. With your list I would be looking at trying to plink damage on to it as it approaches with the sniper (high velocity means they cannot spend dodges) when it gets in closer either try to suppress it out of the game or just throw everything at it, or accept that it will kill your stuff and take that in to account. Killing stuff isnt the be all and end all in Legion and one can still when decimated.
