With the covid running wild where I live I am looking for a fantasy solo games that would allow me to use any (or at least most) minis on any base. I know few titles so far but there may be some I am not aware. Anyway, please tell me about your favourite titles and why do you recommend them. If there are some cons then please also point them. Thanks in advance

I have been messing around with Nightwatch:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/792215.page

It provides a strong foundation for fantasy solo play.

You might also take a look at Brutality:

I haven’t played Brutality and probably because of the weird design where sometimes you want to roll high and sometimes you want to roll low.

I wrote fantasy so it is a bit broad but generally I do not want anything from the modern world. Preferably standard 'fantasy middle ages' but some Victorian era or ancient times are ok as well.

Thanks! Normally, I would have a ton of reviews and thoughts to link you to, but this is a genre I actually have very little to say about right at the moment.

Here are a couple games you can look into, but I know nothing about them....
- Spellslingers and Sellswords
- Rangers of Shadowdeep
- Nightwatch
- 4 Against <Insert Noun here>

From the videos it looks interesting. Wrote to them to send me free rules (I do not have FB account-which is apparently the only place to download them) and will see if i like it. Thanks

Pulp Alley (I ignored it for almost a year thinking it was only for 1930s/40s gaming) is both miniatures agnostic and setting agnostic. A burst effect could be a firebal of plasma, machinegun fire, or a dragon's breath, for example.

The starter rules including the deck of solo cards used to play are available for free download. Lots of community support and the author is very active in responding to questions and has tons of youtube videos.

Here's a video of a Conan-type game using the solo play rules which I've linked down below:

Five Leagues from the Borderlands 2E. A generic fantasy toolbox rules set where you generate a small band of adventurers to save a random number of villages (2-4) from three different types of threats. Bring the threat ratings in each village to zero and you've "won": this small part of the world is safe, and your heroes can ride off into the sunset (or a new campaign). You can set the difficulty at any level; from cinematic where your avatar (the figure who is your alter ego) gets a certain amount of plot armor to realistic (no byes or do-overs). There are a number of small supplements that you can use to flavor to taste.for flavoring in a new or existing campaign.

The original game was Five Leagues from Home which is sci-fi (think Firefly - the author cites that and the original Traveller RPG as inspiration) and he has put out a post-apocalypse version called Five Klicks from the Zone.

Kings of War: Abyssal Dwarves, Dwarves, Elves, Undead, Northern Alliance [WiP], Nightstalkers [WiP]

I've been playing Ironsworn and Arkham Horror LCG, but one is a card game and the other doesn't really use miniatures and can be played using nothing more than your phone.

I've been thinking of trying Lancer. I've read on a few places that you can make the game work solo fairly easily with a digital module someone made for the game called COMP/COM.

Aside from that I've finally gotten around to playing Gloomhaven which is pretty solid. Lots of pieces to keep track of and usually takes as much time to set up as play but it's very fun. Kind of a mix of a minis game, a board game, and an RPG.

Age of Fantasy Regiments.

It has a solo game mode, it has unit creation rules (so you can use any model you want), and the core rules are free.

Check out my videos where I review the rules and do some how to plays.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

I'll echo that Brutality if fun, and has a pretty decent solo mode, with a half-dozen solo-specific scenarios in the full rulebook, which as linked above, Ash is going through on his Youtube channel.

I have yet to delve into any of the solo rules for One Page Rules, either for Age of Fantasy or Grimdark Future. I have only played the two-player normal rules.

Due to the Pandemic I'll be doing some AoF:Regiments solo videos soon enough.

I am looking forward to see how it plays, it seems simple enough, while offering enough of a challenge.

Rally Round The King has an integrated solo system. I find the rules in general to be a bit vague, not entirely sure how to interpret them at times, but I think it has promise so I intend to give them another go.

For solo play of any type you can't go wrong with THW's reaction engine. They've ported it into virtually every setting and they specialize in solo play.

https://www.twohourwargames.com/

All their games are agnostic in terms of minis or basing and they have a large following among those who prefer "indie" wargaming.

There are a few free rulesets so you can try out the mechanics. I'm not generally a fan of solo play but I really liked the way the mechanics worked for independently controlling mobs of zombies when we used the "All Things Zombie" rules.
