Does any of the fluff cover what happens to a world post-exterminatus? So I get that the world is nuked and all life is snuffed out. But what happens then? More settlers, more colonies? Is the world in any way used after that or is it still considered "tainted by X"? I mean as long as it wasn't virus bombed, even a baren rock should still be able to support some form of use to the Imperium, like a Forge planet or a fortress world?

Depends why it was killed off, but some are re-settled - some weapons are designed to leave the world mostly intact.

Was Armageddon properly exterminatus'd after the First War?

Wasn't Tallarn virus bombed? Hence the need for all the tanks.

Yes (it was an agri-world), but it already had substantial underground facilities that survived.

The Great Work deals heavily with preparing a planet that was stripped by Tyranids to be recolonized again.

However, that's technically not exterminatus. In the case of exterminatus, the world is usually not only reclassified as a Dead World, at best, or purged from all astronomical databases at worse, but also warning buoys are deployed and occasionally Imperial Navy ships are placed on permanent patrols around the planet to ensure no one ever approaches it again.

Edit: Armageddon was never exterminatus'd.

You are not allowed to re-visit a world visited by Exterminatus? Just out of curiosity where is that fluffed?

SOME worlds are not only exterminated but forbidden from being landed on again likely for fear of picking up chaos or xenos taint. The worlds the traitor primarchs came from are likely like this. (Altho perturabo saved the imperium the trouble of performing exterminatus on Olympia, I would not be surprised in the imperium burned it out of spite.)

I'm sure the imperium doesn't want people going to, say, chemos, and finding out what a swell guy fulgrim was before he picked up a certain sword, for example.

Nostramo was a rich source of adamantine before Kurze put it out of its misery, maybe the imperium fears adamantine form it's asteroidal derbies is tainted without whatever made the people of nonstramo so corrupted and prevents it being mined for adamantine.

Krieg was supposedly cleansed by atomic fire and has since turned to dubious cloning technology to recover.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Quarantined/Forbidden Worlds are technically a separate classification from Dead Worlds ie worlds that have experienced Exterminatus. However there is plenty of overlap between the two lists. Barbarus, Chemos, Colchis, Cthonia, Olympia, and Prospero are all considered both Dead Worlds and Forbidden Worlds.

That was not through exterminatus though. That was through regular use of atomic weaponry as part of the Krieg civil war.

Is Dead world (Exterminatus) the same as or for all intents and purposes alike as to "Forbidden" worlds?

Prospero for obvious reasons is forbidden, it's a chaos homeworld that was practically devoted to Warp craft?

But are there any worlds where Exterminatus was ordered, and then the planet was re-habitated?
