Hi guys,

Please let me solve the following puzzle.

We have a Leman Russ (12w) and a Morkanaut (18w) facing each other. The leman russ is behind a building high enough to be obscuring so that it can't be shot by the Morkanaut.

Now the question, does the Leman Russ still need to see (draw a line to the base) the Morkanaut?

The obscuring rule of the terrain would indeed let the Leman shoot, but it can't draw a line to the Morkanaut. Hence my Q.

Let's assume that the building is a solid box without windows.

Thanks!

Basic line of sight is still required in order to target a unit, per the normal shooting rules - Obscuring does nothing to override that, even for the exception cases it mentions (Aircraft, 18+ Wounds). So no, the Leman Russ can't fire in your example.

Be aware that line of sight can be drawn to any part of the model now, not just the base. That includes anything like antennae, wings, silly smoke trails - anything.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.

Wonder why they didn't rule a cilinder from the base like in the engagement area to avoid penalizing the creativity.

I can see there being lots of disagreement on whether you could see that imaginary cylinder from halfway across a table, not to mention arguments over exactly how high that cylinder goes. Plus (as Niiai pointed out) most models aren't as wide as their base, and going the other way, some of the biggest models actually stretch beyond their base - take Mortarion's wings, for example.

oh I missed something, where does it say you draw line of sight to the base? I read you can measure distance to the base, and LOS to the model.

Where it says "In order to target an enemy unit, at least one model in that unit must be within range (i.e. within the distance of the Range characteristic) of the weapon being used and be visible to the shooting model. If unsure, get a look from behind the firing model to see if any part of the target is visible." Shooting phase rules Select Targets section.

"one model in that unit must be...visible to the shooting model."

The base is a part of the model.

Wow... pretty much means you can't los block infantry hiding behind a rhino since there's a gap in the tracks, and you could kinda see the models bases.

At least now we know why the Imperium still uses solid skirted tracks on the leman russ.
