New base game/expansion for Battlesystem's Core Space game now up on Kickstarter
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/battlesystems/core-space-first-born/?ref=kicktraq
Core Space is a semi-cooperative (optionally cooperative?) SciFi boardgame/miniatures game hybrid with some RPG lite aspects for 1+ players. Each player plays a 4-man starship crew trying to run into a doomed spaceship/spacestation, rescue NPCs, grab all the loot they can carry, and get out before alien robots destroy everything. Original Core Space game included modular carboard terrain, a neoprene playmat, figures and tokens and playboards for 2 crews plus NPCs and AI/priority driven enemies and players were free to help or hurt each other however they saw appropriate. The game has small a built-in campaign system and some scenarios, but the separate Advanced Rulebook turns that form a simple boardgame dungeoncrawler into a full campaign driven miniatures skirmish game. There's a number of free online scenarios and expansion sets for additional crew characters and enemies, but most importantly there's a free online tool that lets you create custom crewmembers and print out playerboards for them, allowing you to use any miniature to truly create your own captain and crew in a miniatures-agnostic game system that puts Rogue Stars to shame. I didn't get in on the original KS but bought it at retail after seeing it played on Guerilla Miniature Gaming and seeing a bunch of glowing reviews online and it's been worth every penny.
First Born can be played as either a stand-alone base game or as an expansion to the original. New terrain and new enemies, this time instead of going into a space station or starship that's about to be overrun by Alien Robots, you're captain & crew are entering into ancient alien catacombs to liberate some artifacts and the sleeping aliens don't take too kindly to that. Original Core Space terrain was very generic sci-fi spacestation/starship, First Born terrain features overgrown ruins reminiscent of Mass Effect Protheans or Halo Forerunners

On board again, of course.
Strange that this doesn't get more love here. The first one was quite a success and everybody seems to love it. This would be a good game for the crowd that thought BSF was too short and shallow.

I've just registered to share the love. Tbh, I'm not that interested in the game, I've backed it for the scenery which I plan to use in Stargrave when that releases next year. I missed the original kickstarter but I've just bought the retail version of Core Space, I will give the game a try but again, I'm primarily in it for the scenery. I have a bit of the fantasy scenery and it's really nice, and pretty good value

You can now get just the scenery and game mat as an add on buy for £45 which is a pretty good deal as the game is £89.

If I recall correctly, the first Core Space KS happened during the terrible months between finishing grad school and employment, so I couldn't participate.
To be frank, I'd be more interested if the original bundle came available as an add-on. Maybe I should just buy the original game instead? Or just the scenery pack, since that's what I'm most interested in?

How's the mini quality? Saw they're PVC...usually not a fan but PVC has been getting better recently.

That's what I have wondered about Core Space stuff, too. If they are similar to the PVC that Star Wars Legion uses, that's really not a bad material to work with.

They are fine. Not great like in GW quality or collectors item resins, but good boardgame quality. About as good as CMON or Mythic. Look very unimpressive unpainted, but nice afterwards.
The last expansions had HQ resin figures instead though.
But I feel the appeal of the game is less with the figures, and rather the terrain and the (surprisingly good) rules.
I'm really no fan of MDF or cardboard terrain, but this was very nice. And no terrain painting, which is a big plus in my book.

I personally don't have a problem w/ Mythic PVC...have Joan of Arc and think it's quite good. If it compares well to that...I might be onboard. Need something to internally justify another $125+ KS that I don't really need, LOL.

Definitely the terrain and the rules are a high point, but even just the original Purge standalone box could find it's way into one of my projects as a cheap warband, but if the PVC is lower quality, such spindly sculpts make me leery.

My copy of the first Core Space turned up over the weekend and I'm happy enough with the miniatures. Not very bendy, detail is pretty good, the moulded bases are all nice and flat except for one of the Purge figures but even that one still sits flat on the table so it's not too bad. They are billed as 32mm but they seem more like an average 28mm to me, certainly not on the big side by any means
I bought it almost entirely for the scenery but will definitely paint these up for fun at some point

I'm actually thinking of getting a box of the resin Rogue Purge to use in This is Not a Test. They would make a great post-apocalyptic robot warband.

They've just added a new expansion, which is free to kickstarter backers - 4 new characters and a bonus mission. Pretty cool. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/battlesystems/core-space-first-born/posts/3009570
