Hey guys,
I recently got 46 metal cultists (2 # 1,7 #3,7 #4,4 #5,8 #6.9 #7,9 #8) from 3rd edition. All I can find on them is a picture of the 3rd edition page of the codex on Bell of Lost Souls.
Does anyone else have any of these? How come they are so rare to find?
I'm planning on painting these up for my Black legion army and essentially become meat shields on the objectives.

They were a Chapter Approved unit, originally introduced via White Dwarf.
They were also only 3 points each.

That's good to know! I assume these are still legal if used instead of the new models right?

Nice find!! Their rarity can be attributed to a few things:
- it's been 20 years since they were produced it's not like some parts of the Eldar range where they've been in repeated production runs ever since.
- they weren't exactly the greatest unit back then, so I imagine they probably didn't sell that well at the time.
- as mentioned, they only had Chapter Approved rules at a time when that was only just starting to become 'a thing', so not all tourneys accepted them, and some players just flat out wouldn't have been aware of their existence, further stymying the sales.
- there have been a good number of Cultist sculpts sold since, which is going to dilute any attempts to search for them specifically.
I don't see any issue with using them, they're still Citadel miniatures and they're pretty much the right size. They're still on 25mm bases, I take it? The current Cultists are one of the few 40k units still to be sold with that base size:

I actually have 20 of them I use as Thousand Sons cultists. I got them like 20+ years ago (I have been playing since 2nd). They are pretty rare as I don't think they were in production that long, and did not have rules for a long while.
I can't get the picture of them to upload however
Edit: Keep an eye on Ebay though, as I have seen them come up on Ebay, but not often. You are probably going to have to check daily.

That makes sense haha
Yeah they are still in the right base, but it was so hard finding info about them! Automatically Appended Next Post: xeen wrote:I actually have 20 of them I use as Thousand Sons cultists. Yeah I saw a couple but usually like one or two. And here I am with 46 of them!
I just wish I had #2, might have to look on eBay like you said.

Yeah, they're perfectly fine using as current cultists, though you'll maybe want to do some weapon swaps (you get flamers or heavy stubbers as 1/10 upgrades). I think the only issue right now is that none of them have a power axe (so just use it as a CCW, IIRC the originals had access to a limited selection of gear), but other than that they're 100% legit out of the box.

Good call, but I think I'll be playing them as cheap as possible, so all with boltgun and brutal assault weapon. Makes it easier since I wont have to kitbash any of them.

Do you mean autopistol? You'd have to kitbash pretty hard to give them all boltguns, and that isn't an option for the unit anyway.

Whoops, yes I meant Autopistol. Which they already have on the model so it works.

You lucky fellow!
I'd love to get my hands on 15 - 20 of them but they are rare and whey they do crop up, they're prices are obscene (i'm talking £80+ for 20 of them) and they often only sell in singles rather than bulk.
The only thing I find comparable are Bile's enhanced soldiers and Juan Diaz Daemonettes. Bile's soldiers don't tend to sell for much but are rare and the Diaz Daemonettes crop up often enough but people have very poor notions of their worth (we're talking some expecting £10-£15 per model which is plain ridiculous).
The final thing I keep trying to get my hands on is an Armorcast Exocrine (I love both models). Sadly, I missed a few that sold for £25-30 and any i've found since seem to sell for £100+.
eBay used to be a good bastion for reasonably priced miniatures but in the last couple of years it's become insane. I literally saw a unit of part built rubrics sell for more than their BNIB price on GW. It's an expensive hobby and I think GW's price increases have driven more to eBay, upping competition and raising prices. Four years ago I picked up a 2k Tyranid force for like £40 in bits, these days you'd spend that getting 20 gants and a lictor.
