So this is an interesting thing. Boris Wołoszyn is running a pateron now where each month, for $5, you get a mini and sculpting tutorials. At the end of 12 months you get a package with all 12 (or $6ish per shipment that you can request at any time). I'm assuming Westfalia is handling his casting as they've already showing off the December mini from the pateron.

He's taking suggestions for what to sculpt next month. Most of the suggestions are just D&D characters but, hey, if you can get one of the best to sculpt it why not right?

December's mini:

I'll admit, when this thread was called Boris's Cabinet of Curiosities, I wasn't expecting a thread about miniatures.

More importantly, is there a direct way to buy the pictured miniature? I’d be happy to buy one or two of them at a reasonable price but don’t want to use patreon.

My mind instantly went elsewhere too, and I'm not even a Brit.

Interesting to see though. Wołoszyn is one of those sculptors with a really distinct style. I dig it. Cool idea as well.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

As far as they've said no. Everything is seaming limited to Pateron but unless you have to have some of the first designs he does it's easy enough to see what happens. My thoughts are if they sell them direct the figures will show up after the 12 month "block" figures have shipped to backers. However you can easily back for 1 month then pay to have it shipped but it takes 4-6 weeks according to Boris to get molded and cast so expect them to show up a month and a half after the featured month ends.

Huh.

So, is Larry Elmore involved in this, or is Boris just 'borrowing' his art for 'inspiration?'

I knew I recognized her! From the D&D Red Box books inside art, among other places.

Bam, said the lady!

Not involved. This is quite common for Borris to do old fantasy sculpts right from some art as practice but they usually don't get produced. But as Chapterhouse vs GW has shown it's pretty much legal in the US for him to do this unless the Elmore Estate owns that art and can prove they have a miniature in production (it's the same in the UK where some parts of Westfalia are). It's legally a derivative work.

In some ways its less than legality as much as the basic politeness and decency to provide sources to the original material when doing derivative work, as well as at least notify the creator that you're doing it.

Though odds are pretty good that WotC owns the artwork from their TSR acquisition.

Wow, thanks for posting this. I backed his Heroquest reimagined stuff, and it's great.

I've backed this too. Free minis in 12 months! For only $5 each!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...
