GW made a big deal about them because there was overwhelming demand for them. not out of some attempt to prove they're woke.

Wife paints and plays, even doing tournaments now. My advice would get a model or two of each faction and see how they like it, briefly going over the lore.
To save some time, start with Xenos first, then DG if anything. We have a number of female players in our area, none of them care about SM or SoB. I'm sure they're out there but that's just what I've personally seen.

Yeah and it had nothing at all to do with the huge sexist backlash they were getting at the time....

Considering that work on an army update of that scale likely took more than a few years - I doubt it was a factor. It's more likely that Sisters of Battle were justa really old army that perhaps sold okish and then got ignored for so long that its current sales were super low. Don't forget they hardly even moved them into finecast they were that ignored. So GW got a lot of emails and requests and clearly staff desire to make them; made a huge investment and then decided to do the sensible thing and market the heck out of them to make darn sure that their investment sold.
And it worked - gamers got their army; GW got their sales.
It's similar to how big named AAA computer games are not always "the best" purely by design, but also because they get a LOT of marketing behind them; ensuring a huge turnover of sales.
