Hey all, I am "new" to 40k, sorta. I bought a whole bunch of Space Marines back in 1998 (3rd edition), barely put some together, many still in boxes.. Can I use these space marines to build a Grey Knight army? Do Grey Knights use specific models (Primaris!?) Thanks for your help.

Grey Knights do NOT have any Primaris models... Yet.

What models do you have? They'll probably be a lil' small, and they might not have all the GK bits, but you can probably make something work.

I have probably 40 marines, 2 assault squads, a command squad, a whole mix of terminators, some bikes, and a couple of the flyers (the name eludes me atm). My other thoughts are a) to create 2 armies as the Grey Knights models have a specific look, so I could do a Raven Guard with my old bits and start building up the GKs and play em together, or b) in looking around, it seems like the Daemon Hunters evolved to Grey Knights (or I made that up), am I right? If so I could do the old models in that style and once again add the new GK to my force!?

Normal space marine models are pretty different from what Grey Knights are supposed to look like. Normal marines have Bolters, Grey Knights have Storm Bolters and Force Weapons on their basic guys. Normal marines (and primaris marines) are separate from Grey Knights in terms of models. Grey Knights used to be in the faction called "Daemonhunters", but now they are simply called "Grey Knights", and they have their own new plastic Grey Knights miniatures.

2 armies can definitely work. Your old guys could be Raven Guard, or any other type of regular marine. Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, Iron Hands, White Scars, etc. Raven Guard are a good choice.

Yep, the old Grey Knights book was called Daemonhunters. The old book had metal Grey Knight models, the new book has newer plastic Grey Knight models. The old Grey Knights in the old Daemonhunters book had the same weapons as the new ones, that is storm bolters and force weapons, so that still doesn't match regular marine models.

You can make your old models into any type of marine, and you can have Grey Knights as a second army or an allied force in the same army.

Why not play them as marines?

Yes. Use marines as support for your specialist daemon hunters, and build to suit this theme.

No they dont use primaris but they do use their own special armor and weapons, so no you cant make a basic SM look like a grey knight.
But you can run a detatchment of regular SM alongside your grey knights and vice versa, so your models are not wasted. Only thing is the base sizes has increased so you need to swap them on your marines.

Paint em silver and get to purging those daemons!
