My own region recently emerged from its second lockdown, and we had a chance to get gaming again. Curious how people's local meta are shaping up. We had our Club Champs last weekend, with eighteen players (half capacity in our gaming space). It was six-rounds at the 2000 point level using the GT20 mission pack. Scores were out of 90 as all armies had to painted and paint scores were judged. While our final rankings incorporate painting and sportsmanship, on victory points the rankings were:
1 - Deathguard with Mortarion (517 points out of a possible 540)
2 - Chaos Daemons with three Keepers of Secrets and two Lords of Change (477)
3 - Orks with lots of buggies (444)
4 - Sisters of Battle (423)
5 - Ultramarines (419)
6 - Space Wolves (410)
7 - Chaos Knights (397)
8 - Alpha Legion (362)
9 - Custodes (348)
10 - Grey Knights (344)
11 - Necrons (343) - your humble scribe
12 - Necrons (339)
13 - Deathwatch (324)
14 - Harlequins (305)
15 - Astra Militarum (283)
16 - Dark Angels (258)
17 - Iron Hands (251)
18 - Tau (175)
Local tourneys probably have much more chances for variation than the larger events. A good mix of armies: 5 Space Marine (plus a Grey Knight) and 5 Xenos is pretty good. Space Marines were certainly not dominating the scores either. Unless you consider Morty a Space Marine?
DG with Mortarion at the top spot is probably not a surprise to anyone, and there is quite a bit of separation between the DG and the next list. Daemons doing well is also not a surprise, and Orks with buggies and Truks play the objective game very well. Tau struggling is also no surprise.
The Harlequins showing towards the bottom was a surprise - some disastrous early games. Dark Angels being near the bottom might also raise eyebrows.
The changes to scoring made earlier this month definitely had an effect, particularly the changes to Abhor the Witch and Bring it Down. Those Secondaries are not auto-takes anymore and folks are also bringing single psykers again. There had been a tendency to not taking a psyker to have access to Abhor the Witch. Being able to dominate the mid-board continues to be critical, and you need a plan for both the Primary and Secondaries. Castling-up in your deployment zone hasn't worked during 9th edition.
All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand
We have a lot of local Space Marine players. One Tau/ Guard player + myself, another playing Guard and a traitor Guard. A GSC player and another that plays Tyranids. An old Necron player and a new one, on top of that a Sister of Battle Player. One of the Guard also play Dark Eldar.
Meta wise... I'd say anything with a Codex is hilariously stronger than one without a new one.
Hard to say whats really dominant here because it continues to be almost all marines.
Very limited games going on mostly just masked I'm at peoples houses bit of the 10 people I know are playing games 8 are playing out of codex space marines, then theres one admech player who ive never seen a batrep of him winning and me playing mostly orks gsc and drukhari.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
Me: Necrons, (+SW, SoB & SM Dreadnoughts) Mostly playing Necrons, but the other three make random appearances.
Other People, between two shops (** plays at both shops):
*Orks
**SoB *SoB *SM *SW/SM *Admech
*Admech/Knights
*Dark Eldar/Eldar
*Guard
*GK *Necrons/DG *UM/Knights/Thousand Sons
*Thousand Sons
*DW/SM *Tau - haven't seen this player for awhile due to his RL schedule.
Dead as a dodo because of the infinite lockdown and my friends unwillingness to ignore authority. That said I live 5 minutes away from one of the players and I introduced him to a bunch of board games over the winter while it was too cold to play in the garage.
Let's see... at my shop, we're seeing the following armies (and primarily playing from the GT2020 book):
Spoiler:
Experienced Players (started in 8th edition or earlier)
-Me, playing exclusively IG right now. Space Marines have been shelved since 2.0 codex in 8th.
-player with Necrons, DG, GSC. GSC have been shelved since 8th dropped. Mostly playing Necrons right now.
-player with Black Legion, DG, and Ultramarines. Was playing Black Legion early in 9th, has shifted pretty exclusively to DG.
-player with Blood Angels
-player with T'au and Raven Guard. T'au permanently shelved (trying to sell them)
-player with Ad Mech, Nurgle Daemons, Drukhari. Mostly playing Ad Mech right now, but occasionally Nurgle Daemons.
-player with Tyranids
-player with Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Custodes. Only playing Ultramarines so far in 9th.
-player with Craftworlds and Space Wolves. Only playing Space Wolves right now.
-player with Blood Angels, Black Legion, and Death Watch. Black Legion are currently shelved.
-player with Thousand Sons, Tempestus Scions, Salamanders. Scions are shelved.
-player with Custodes and Ultramarines. Playing both armies regularly.
-player with Tyranids and Raven Guard. Focusing on Tyranids, might be selling Raven Guard
-player with Death Guard and Necrons. Primarily playing Necrons.
-player with Orks, taking a break
-player with Space Wolves. Taking a break
-player with Guard and GSC. Taking a break
-player with Craftworlds, Drukhari, Harlequins. Taking a break.
-player with Slaanesh Daemons. Taking a break.
-player with Orks and IG. Taking a break
New Players (just started in 9th):
-player with Tyranids and Flesh Tearers. Playing both regularly.
-player with Orks
-player with Necrons
-player with Necrons and Space Marines. Focusing on Necrons
I guess looking at the active players' "primary" armies, that would give us:
4x Necrons
3x Codex Marines
2.5x Tyranids
2x Blood Angels (.5 represents a player who splits their focus between two armies)
1x IG 1x Death Guard
1x Orks
1x Space Wolves
.5x Ad Mech
.5x Custodes
.5x Death Watch
.5x Chaos Daemons
.5x Thousand Sons
0x Sisters of Battle, Craftworld Eldar, Drukhari, Harlequins, Grey Knights, Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Daemons, Dark Angels, Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights, Genestealer Cults, T'au
I have only played 5th edition games with personal friends over the last few months courtesy of everything being closed since about November thanks to a COVID surge, so we haven't had a change to see the effect of DG or DA on the meta, but before it shut down the local meta was about entirely Space Marines or CSM, with token single Eldar and Tyranids players. A bunch of people haven't been seen since pre covid times, and like everybody else has switched to or picked up a SM army since 9th dropped.
Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!
I play Black Legion, Argent Shroud Sisters, and Chaos Daemons, and lose every game against my friend who plays Chaos Knights, Deathwatch and Deathwing/Dark Angels or my brother who plays Orks, usually.
Because numbers aren't dropping our playing location and stores remain locked down, and most people don't want to play on TTS. So our meta is down to just four people, with another two playing games against each other by loading, playing an hour or two and then saving for the next time.
Despite TTS, we mostly play models we own, armies played are DG, orks, necrons, TS, DA, harlequins, drukhari, craftworlds and ynnari.
Not much to say about the state of our meta except that DG, necrons and DA are playing in another league than than the other codices. Only harlequins and orks are able to keep up despite the uphill battles, TS and the other aeldari just get run over by a steam roller.
7 Ork facts people always get wrong: Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other. A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot. Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests. Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books. Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor. Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers. Orks do not have the power of believe.
I think everyone in my club owns at least one marine army, three folks have Dark Angels. A couple of successor chapters, one Grey Knights, One Deathwatch, one Blood Angels, Ultramarines, and White Scars.
We also have two Tyranid players, one GSC, One Craftworlds, One Drukhari, Two Orks, Three Necrons, Three Death Guard, One Alpha Legion, One Knights, two Admech, One Custodes, two Demons and one Thousand Sons.
Right Now, the most popular armies, are Necrons, Dark Angels and Death Guard from those who regularly play. We just came out of a stay at home order a couple of weeks ago, so we are slowly getting into meeting up again.
Still in full lockdown in the UK, so I'm limited to the very small group of friends that are playing via the internet. The armies are all owned IRL as well, save for the of unit being tested here and there, which is quite nice.
So my "meta" is currently, by player;
Orks (me)
Death guard/space wolves
Ultramarines/Dark angels/genestealer cults
Iron hands/generic chaos space marines
Deathwatch
The lack of diversity is killing me. My only break is when the GSC come out.

Our last event was during a major lul back in November, so we were able to have an event here. Due to the small number of games over-all, and the excellent hobbyism of our area, the meta was actually very diverse. There was only 2 duplicate armies; two Custodes players, two Ork players.
Still a VERY healthy number of Marines, but the players that played Marines are well-known Marine players of our area, and none of them were duplicates of the same chapters (because the Ultra player played Ultras, the Blood Angel player played Blood Angels, etc.). They would be playing Marines if they were good or terrible. The only factions NOT represented? Harlequins, Thousand Sons, and Imperial Knights (Chaos Knights, however, were present).

I had to sell almost everything to keep a roof over my head the past year, but I still have a small growing force of Primaris Marines (leaning Dark Angels) that I hope to use against a couple friends.
Should be facing off against:
Orks
Death Guard
Tyranids
Maybe Tau. (Our Tau guy seems pretty peeved by the state his army is in)
Praying to get a game of 9th edition in before Summer.
Our local meta is small, just a group of friends, but out of the 6 regulars we have a nice variety considering our group size.
We have one guy playing Crimson Fist, Guard, Iron Warriors and World Eaters. Although the last 2 won't see any play until their update.
The rest is:
Necron/Tyranid player
Ad Mech player
Ork player
2 DG players (inluding me)
Luckily for the rest we play a different style of DG so playing one does not feel like playing the other.
Once we can get space cleared and a small table for Combat Patrol and Incursion games, my roommates and I will be sharing my old collection and doing lots of proxying..
Sadly my local scene is mostly pretty dead other than the odd casual game, thanks to the pandemic. We haven't had a local RTT for over a year now when we used to have one every month.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.
Grotsnik Corp. Sorry, No Refunds.
My local meta is itching to get back to the club and play, but we're all taking lock down super seriously so it won't be for a few months.
Online there's a LOT of new necron and marine players, but as a club we all have very varied armies to bring to the table, think we have literally every army represented barring possibly Chaos Knights
Last night was our weekly game night with an average turnout. We had:
2 x Custodes
1 x Death Guard
1 x Grey Knights
1 x Craftworld
1 x Drukhari
1 x Imperial Guard with Imperial Knight
1 x White Scars
The scene has been changing quite a bit over the last several months with less Marine armies being played. As a result, I (Craftworld) have been tweaking the list to a more take all comers as opposed to one geared against Marines.
No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

That's lucky thing to have. I would be happy about ability to face orks, genestealer cults, daemons and tyranids. 8&9e I have faced tyranids maybe 3 times total...Cults I have yet to face. Seen once or twice on tournament but never faced.
Facing something that isn't 3+ or better save army wide is very refreshing.
I have faced in 37 games of AOS way more factions than in 40k over course of 8&9e combined.

My local meta, which consists primarily of myself and several friends consists of
My Armies, Orks, Tyranids and Black Templars
A chaos space Marine player/ Imperial Guard
An Admech/Imperial Guard Player,
A space Wolf player,
Thousand Sons/Death Guard player,
A Dark Angels/Necrons Player.
Of those who play regularly, only I, the Admech and Dark Angels guy play regularly, the CSM Player is returning to the hobby, and has a truly staggeringly vast Army. Otherwise my Meta is the three of us. Since I built a full sized 40k Table back in 2014 we have gotten several games in without too much disruption from COVID.
I play mostly with Tyranids
The potted plant in the corner turtles with an AdMech shooting castle
The nice voice in the radio controls the GSC horde
And my wife plays with the Blood Angels, but I am a bit worried about her mental health, the lockdown has been hard on her.

There is no right or wrong way to enjoy Warhammer, but a basement table with friends is, I think, the frame in which 40K is designed. I am lucky enough to have a son who started playing 40K when he was a kid, and a decade later we still have great battles on our table. A game with friends at the house just has a different feel.

Sorry to hear that. We have had two lockdowns, but the 40K community has rebounded each time.
Today for the morning games at the store (everything is pre-booked now for contact tracing) we had Dark Angels, Raven Guard, Black Templars, Death Guard and two Drukhari. Our next tourney (fingers crossed) will be in May.
