First off, I'm an odd duck; so let's just get that out of the way.
Second; I did end up buying one box of the start collecting because it's the only thing in stock in my city at the moment for guard infantry. But now I have a Leman Russ I don't even want. I would have definitely picked up the Cadian Defence Force, or even better, that Bastion Platoon (exactly the models I want).
But they've been all sold out of both for a month. Both at the LGS and the local GW; and I won't do online ordering anymore because [ Reasons that I can't talk about without breaking Dakka's best rule.].
Regardless, I'd like to see more effort put into diverse line infantry models for the xenos factions than for guard. I mean, for all necrons to look the same makes sense I suppose; but all Hormagaunts? We're always being told that the hive mind adapts and changes it's bioforms rapidly. How about some alternate models showing off some of that adaptability?

Most people tend to go for the Start Collecting set instead. Hell, the Catachan Squad is not even carried in GW's stores!
The Cadian Defence Force box is a discount box that's closer to what I guess you want, but at this point in time? Guard is a holdover of a poor design choice and basically a trap army. The "Platoon" isn't even a thing anymore. It's players clinging to an older design mechanic that no other army, as far as I'm aware, has been subjected to.
If you want to play a shooty force? Go for AdMech, GSC, or Tau. Any of those give you better troop options, point for point, and a more interactive game than "One dude shouts and people stand in a corner going pewpew". I gave up on my Guard when Skitarii came out and let me play a far, far more interesting version of Guard than Guard had let me do since the Doctrines book got replaced.
From what I know about Tau in 9th, you're better off playing Guard.

That would have been quite the trick, as the Bastion Platoon was this past year's Christmas bundle...but I get what you're saying. There's a reason why I've considered both of the Guard Start Collecting sets to basically just be "Allies in a Box".
But they've been all sold out of both for a month. Both at the LGS and the local GW; and I won't do online ordering anymore because [ Reasons that I can't talk about without breaking Dakka's best rule.].
I'm sorry for your issues there, but I don't know what else to say for you then. A lot of these things(notably the Cadian Defence Force) are Direct Only as they're older things. The CDF is 5-6 years old at this point! It hasn't been available in store for a looooooooooong time at this juncture.
Regardless, I'd like to see more effort put into diverse line infantry models for the xenos factions than for guard. I think you've got a bit of a misunderstanding issue here...
Hormagaunts are, in and of themselves, one of those "adaptations". They're a specific biomorph, intended to provide swarms of ranged fire. Termagants are another adaptation.
Further to that, we start looking at the actual weapons which are--again--those adaptations you're talking about.

I think you're mixing up your gaunts there; and I might be wrong, but I would have figured the hivemind would tweak it's basic forms for the unique environment of each world they're landing on. Hooves work great if you're on a world with lots of plains, less useful if the planet's surface is 90% bogs and marshes; then you swap them out for webbed feet; ect.
As for Tau: I was highly tempted to come back to them instead and do a little Kroot army, but, they still lack a HQ choice, and the Crisis suits never appealed to me. (I did pure FW, Devilfish, piranahas and Hammerheads when I used to play Tau, and that army was... over competitive.)

You're not wrong, I always mix Hormagaunts(stabby stabby!) with "Termagants"(pewpew!).
Haven't seen Tyranids on the field in quite some time, sadly.
Personal Tau army here:
Darkstrider, MSU Pathfinders, a few Broadsides, some Stealth Suits, and Fire Warriors to anchor it all together with Crisis Suits and a Fireblade+Commander rounding out HQ choices.
The stuff from The Greater Good gave a heck of a lot of new life to Pathfinders and Railsides.

Yeah, lets not fight and bicker and argue of who got more of the left over scraps, we both get pretty slim pickings few and far between.
Don't forget the Taurox/Prime kits, they are there as well.
Still not much to dig into, the last couple years ? I think a few special characters maybe that are of dubious use.

Yeah totally agree, i think its too much to ask for AOS model variety
But unitl there is the "PuRge ThE XeNo" meme and SM players keeps buying every model GW throws at them i guess there is not so much to do
Screw model variety, screw the meta and also screw the lore, in a not so far future there will be just marine vs marines,

Well, there is a bright side. Means if you only play Eldar or Guard we could go into hibernation wake up a year later and probably not have missed any exciting new models. For Guard I could have safely slept away the last two years or just wandered off from the game and come back and been like " Nothing ? I see, glad I didn't miss anything. "

I'm this ][ close to starting an Imperial Guard army. I'm just begging GW to give me a reason to do so.
But I can't because as much as I love the models and the concept, it's not fun when that fails utterly and completely to translate to the tabletop and I instead just get ground into the dust, repeatedly.
Tau is similar. I dream of the day Tau return to being the army I loved in 5th edition.
It's not even as much the model release schedule for marines that irks me most, I can ignore that. It's their constant scale creep upwards. Now they have two wounds it makes guard equivalent infantry looks absolutely pathetic. Why even bother with a Guard squad when they kill an average of 0.5 marines per turn? There's cheaper and weaker firepower and then there's pissing at the wind.

Farsight Tau in late 8th were how Tau should have played editions ago.
And lets be honest. The veteran crisis bomb was OP as heck. Turn 2 deepstriking what was basically 11 Tau Commanders (9 crisis suits with 3 CIB hitting on 2 rerolling 1's to hit and 1's to wound) + 2 tank commanders anihilated basically everything, and with a good optimization of defensive profiles + shield drones they were extremely hard to remove. I have had that Farsight bomb destroy from 3 imperial knights the turn they droped to a full imperial guard parking lot to 2/3 of a salamander army when salamanders were the most OP marines. And when they failed to do that, have them survive the full shooting (3 tank commanders, 2 manticores with the 3 damage one, 2 basilisk+ everything else) of a AM army thanks to shield drones, 5+FNP, a 4++ crisis and a 2+ crisis that ignored ap -1 and -2.
But outside that power combo, playing with breachers from devilfishes, Stealth Suits and Piranhas a extremely movile force that was regarded by taking risky plays and shooting enemys from up close was not only unexpected for most people (because people dont expect Tau to do that), it was also extremely fun.

That is true, with the Tau use. Problem for me is I used to like that play style before breachers were around. I have all the other units, just not them and don't want to buy them to try and get the same bang for back like the fish of fury days of old. Which is sad.

So funny sotry.. After not spending anything on minins for a couple months ive been doing some Overtime as well as getting extra money for traveling etc. I decided to treat myslef. I spent £XX on minatures. And not a single penny went to GW (I got Krull from mierce finaly after eyeballin it for years.. all hail 1/2 models !! ) .. Its not even for a game I play or a collection I'm building.. But simply because I am not interested in getting a limited edition space marine camptain/luitenant #3343 and there is nothing of note being released for 40k outside of marines... I think I will dabble in infinity next to see the quality of their minis..

Get off the merry go round of abuse/exploitation and try an actual tactical game with a company that doesn't abuse its customers. Or just be fated to repeat it all over again. This has been a complaint for DECADES.

Yeah if I could get any other sci-fi game with at least a little melee started for a group, I'd have done it a LONG time ago. You obviously don't understand how long it takes or how difficult it is to get a group started for a new wargame.

Lol I left GWs shenanigans behind long before Primaries marines were introduced.
Actually, taking gak from a company you patronize because you already have so much stuff already is a pretty good analogy. If you're not willing to cut the cord and go with another company that doesn't abuse its customers, because of your investment in such a company, then it holds true. As I said, just keep complaining about it, it won't change. Lol

I used to be one of the vilest of dakka... still am. When I play my next game though I’ll make the best of it. If I get ruthlessly stomped into the ground I’ll try again. Hopefully they’ll get bored of easy wins and help me, or try to address the imbalance. I certainly would do the same for them. I won’t expect it though. I’ll throw the dice and I’ll enjoy the close matchups. I’ll laugh and smile at the games that are little more than me putting my models on the table and taking them off of it promptly. I remember joking in 7th that all my chaos space marines did was explode and run away because of my taudar opponents. I also remember laughing at a scatter die that scattered from my terminator squad to an enemy vehicle and exploding it. That terminator squad ate an entire turn of shooting from a tau and neuron player. The image of terminators teleporting into a hail of gun fire, with lasers and gauss rounds ricocheting off their armor in an endless torrent followed by the whistle of a mortar from the sky, bouncing off a comedically oversized pauldron, and exploding a nearby vehicle... I lost that game but it was fun to watch that happen. I hope to make more fond memories, regardless of the state of the game. Maybe I’ll even make my army the equivalent of the space balls in fact I think I can count my victories in 40K on 2 fingers out of a dozen. I’m just going to put the models I want on the table roll the dice and see what happens and hope I walk from the table with an interesting story to tell. I may not like primaris either, but they are here. At least my imperium hating army will have no shortage of imperial scum to attack.
I count myself lucky that my faction received the attention it did. But at the end of the day if you think the game can be more fun why not suggest to your partner messing with the game? Did you just table your opponent turn 3? Wouldn’t it be more fun to try to buff the other army in some way until it takes turn 5? Wouldn’t it be fun to see how much your army can endure until it loses? If you are getting crushed, why not propose that challenge? If you can only play games you lose by a wide margin, why not try to make it funny? Make like your dudes are the red vs blue characters. If it’s marines dominating you make commentary that breaks the 4th wall. “Curse you and your plot armor!” “Arise my minions and capture their image in your spherical surface!” “You killed the warlord! You bastard!” (In a mock Kyle from South Park voice). “How come I can’t hit s*** with the sniper rifle?” I bet you can imagine appropriate situations to drop those lines and constantly more. “And the red shirts pressed onward... until they didn’t”

I actually do, though not as much as GW stuff. Not for my own desires but by GWs own impetus keeping some players ever in their orbit with no deviation.

Easy to say. Hard when there are no one in your area who has even heard of the game, and where fiddly pewter models are a huge turn off too.
Played years ago in 1st edition, but not a game I'm interested in returning too, except as a hobby project to paint a model or two.
