Thanks for all the help you guys gave over the last few days!

My friends and I have all decided to give crusade a go, and start with a small 500 point list.

I'm trying to go with a solid foundation, so I was thinking maybe the start collecting box? I really don't know where to begin! I don't want to go down the Warboss on bike route as I feel it's a little more specialised! And really good at 500pts too!

What would you advise?

Thank you!

Hi, be aware the Starter box will not include a HQ choice, that will need to be ordered separately. For best results ‘in game’, current wisdom has it that you go ‘all in’ on either infantry or vehicles, (not mix both) to minimise the effectiveness of your opponents’ firepower.

If you are buying new, online retailers often give a substantial discount, which may offset the savings you would achieve buying a Starter box, with the advantage that you can choose your units.

So, at 500 pts you’d need about 100 for a HQ, leaving 400 for about 50 ‘Boyz Equivalents’. 50 Slugga/Shoota Boyz, or 25 Storm/Kommando/Tankbusta Boyz. Alternately, you could look at a half dozen Deff Dreddz.

I assume you have access to points, as you quoted a 50p pt limit.

Honestly, I've never liked the ork sc box. it gets you a painboy for free, essentially but you've got no HQ and the force is just kind of disjointed and bad, its all super slow melee only units that either slam into and totally crush the enemy or (more commonly) get dunked on from way far away.

Personally, my starting setup for 500pt orks would be a warboss with a klaw, a unit of boyz, and then either make a mini green tide by getting more boyz and making the squad bigger, or stick 'em in a trukk and add some speed freek supporting elements like one of the new buggies or some bikers.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

If buying new and GW, the start collecting box is good I think. I like the dreadnought model, and boys and nobs or necessary. Buy a truck kit, and another box of boyz, then more boyz and another truck. If you can buy used models, get boyz from eBay, then get a bunch of grots from eBay, then get more stuff from eBay.

Oh, and for HQs, GW has a box with Grukk Face Rippa and some nobs. You can use the bits from the different nobs and other bits to convert your own big mech and mechs and even weirdboy if you want one.

Honestly, for crusade I would advise going more towards vehicles. Ork infantry armies usually consist of large, expensive units, so having them gain experience or upgrading them is not as interesting as having multiple vehicle units you can customize. The start collecting is not terrible, but not great either.
For a vehicle list you definitely should look at getting a unit of boyz and a trukk for your mandatory troops, for your HQ you can either get Grukk's mob and or two boxes of MANz and build one of them into a big mek. Flesh out your army with mek guns, buggies, dreads, a plane or a battlewagon and you are ready to go.

If you are unsure on what units are worth spending money on, check the first post of this thread: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/790345.page

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
