Heyo

I noticed some of my paints that have been racked up have started to get pigment separation etc. some have been sat there for 6+ months (Yieks!)
Figured I'd invest into one of the knock-off vortex mixer/shaker things and see how it is. Manually shaking 60+ pots of paints kinda hurts the arm lol.
The vibration mixed has done a solid job of restoring all of them to serviceable levels.

So I want to get some sort of system in place to keep paints serviceable for as long as possible.
Therefore a question to the comunity:

How often do you all go through your paints to shake them? Or what other methods to people use to care for their paints?

Trying to decide on some sort of method/ system.

Thanks!

I shake them as and when i use them so colours i use less often need more of a shake. I have some late 80s citadel paints that still work fine too. I personally wouldnt take the time to shake every paint i own on a regular basis.

Every fortnight it probably works out at.
I’m sure this topic came up somewhere recently as I remember writing this.
But basically I have the GW paint tray box thing. And each quarter has those little hex storage things holding 24 paints.
I just pick the whole thing up and give it a good shake, it’s getting a few dozen done at once.
Individually doing all the pots would be crazy.
(And with stoping them drying out, as we are talking paint pot care. I clean the back rims so they close better, and never open too far.
Can’t say I’ve had more than one or two dry out from that, with all my citadels.
With my other range paints, I have to shake a couple in each hand at a time. But it’s not too bad..

Which mixer did you buy? Can you give us a link?

I use dropper bottles. With a small glass bead in them.
I have a nail polish bottle shaker as well.

It's a small electric motor run device with a rubber "cup" top that gets used for properly shaking up nail polish bottles.

I stopped using pots a number of years ago.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Hey I got this one

Really rate it. Conventional shaking just dont do as good a job once pigment starts separating into colours IMO.

I use entirely dropper bottles and just always store them upside down. The paint fills the nozzle and in theory should help prevent paint drying up at the tip (although S75 always seems to still clog...I'm in the process of phasing them all out for Vallejo or AK).

I paint often enough and have trimmed down my color selection that I use all my colors frequently. So usually just a quick hand shake before each use is sufficient enough for me.

Basically i try give them all a good shake every couple of months, and if it's getting really bad ill add some medium to the pots. I really am not a big fan of the citadel pots at all and have been thinking about making a change to another brand all together.

I couldn't agree more. Citadel pots are terrible customer friendly experience lol.

The problem I have is that some of the metallic. Paints I bought in dropper bottle had clearly separate coloured pigments and the first time I used them, rookie, I didn’t shake them properly so some of the coloured pigment is stuck at the top of the dropper and never seems to mix back into the paint. And a bit more comes out so I don’t think the ratio will ever be right to get the intended colour.
