Greetings folks,

So, there are a lot of negative threads out there right now, and so I wanted to make a thread to specifically talk about great games we have either played recently or just have overall stuck with us. Just today, actually, I had a wonderful experience with my non-chaos imperial rebels compromising their morals and teaming up with a thousand sons force to repel a massive horde of necron warriors. The game was tense, and the action swung hard in both directions. The end came not when the match would have otherwise been over, but when our store closed and we all had to go home. At that point it looked, just barely, like our forces were making another comeback, with massive melee piles on all sides of the board and the horde thinning considerably.

The whole thing was chaotic, ridiculous, cinematic, and just wildly 40k in all the best ways. Obviously there were plays on both sides that could have changed things dramatically, but we all had fun and the whole experience was of orchestrating a massive battle with the fate of a world hanging in the balance. Epic stuff indeed. Also: at one point someone bopped a piece of a god on the nose like a naughty puppy, so that's a thing that happened.

How about you folks:

Share either a recent great 40k experience or one that has stuck with you over the years. Let's bring on the positive vibes!

So many of my games in 9th have been great. I really can only say there was 1 game that was less than stellar, and it wasn't even my opponent's fault - it was mine. The game's in a great spot for your average pickup game.

Back in 8th edition I had a Herald of Slaanesh on a Seeker nick named "suicide bomber". It would routinely suffer perils of the warp and explode killing everything around it and would literally swing games. I distinctly remember one game that I had run into the enemy lines and went to cast smite. The game wasn't looking promising for me, however the herald blew up and took out half of my opponents army and put me into the lead. The next week it blew up most of my army and turned a probable victory into a solid loss.

Unfortunately the Herald of Slaanesh on a Seeker is now legends, but it was hilarious to see in action.

Game itself it's at its golden age, or at least it's in one of its best periods ever. Miniatures not so, there's some awesome models among the new stuff but also lots of clunky and cartoony dudes, starting with the modern Space Marines.

I don't have particular anectodes to share but I'm having a lot of fun with both SW and orks right now.

We started a narrative driven 40k Crusade a few weeks ago where I'm taking the overall role of a "Game Master" in addition to participating as a player.

It is so much more fun than simple matched play, as you have all these varied missions that really mess with your regular game plan.

The battles mean something and and you can come up with those neat little stories.

The first 500p game of Crusade I played wasn't just "Assassinate", it was my Ultima Founding chapter's first real combat mission where the hotheaded but inexperienced Company Champion wanted to prove his honor by severing the head of the Chaos forces in a swift strike. It became a desaster and now I got a rivalry going on between that Chaos Sorcerer and my Chapter Command.

Crusade brought at least one person back that was taking a break from 40k and it is genuinly pleasant to play with him.

In addition it sparked a lot of "surrounding hobby aspects interest" as in... people are really pushing now to get their armies painted, buy new terrain and maps or bring their pre-owned stuff to the store to be used by everyone.

We have between 1 and 3 Crusade events now per week, where before it was usually only on Sundays.

The good thing about being the "Game Master / Organiser" is, that I can enforce house rules super easy and across all games and players.

Chaos for example gets their 2nd wound no problem.

Shoutouts to @PenitentJake for giving me some inspiration and sharing his experience with me.

Custom40k Homebrew - Alternate activation, huge customisation, support for all models from 3rd to 10th edition

Designer's Note: Hardened Veterans can be represented by any Imperial Guard models, but we've really included them to allow players to practise their skills at making a really unique and individual unit. Because of this we won't be making models to represent many of the options allowed to a Veteran squad - it's up to you to convert the models. (Imperial Guard, 3rd Edition)

Having a full skeleton on your shield, instead of having a slab of metal, should be more clunky. Maybe it is that.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

I did a test game of 30k Blackshields against Dark Angels. By the end of the game I was 0-7 and my opponent had accidently brought 3k points instead of 2k but because of a Rite of War condition, my opponent couldn't win and due to the aforementioned 1k points difference they have me the win.

Yesterday I had a crusade game playing the second legendary mission of the book of rust campaign.

It was a hilarious battle of trying to outpump the other side, while my Lord of Virulence was dueling a Dark Angels Master in Gravis Armor in the middle of the board. Thanks to transhuman and DR, they only did minimal damage to each other which made it feel very epic.

During turn four my five years old daughter started deploying her orks on one side of the board and declared that her Waaagh! would now be attacking. Turn five was the Death Guard and Dark Angels running away from the orks.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

D'aw, that's sweet.

For me... I haven't had any games recently, due to Covid, unfortunately. But I will recall something from my first game of 40k ever.

There was a local guy at my GW-he was the nicest guy. Organized this HUGE Apocalypse game, end of 6th, early 7th. I had NO MODELS at this time. I knew the rules, mostly, but didn't own a dang thing besides Codecs. So, in addition to organizing this Apocalypse game, bringing drinks and snacks half an hour before the shop opened, he loaned me 1,500 points of Black Templars. I ended up on the Xenos side (just due to how points shook out) but we made some goof about the Templars being tricked, and the game started.

I deepstruck a Dreadnought in a Drop Pod near the enemies' Baneblade, but it scattered off the table (didn't know it could do that!) and mishapped-so they placed it right on our side. But, later on, it got vengeance, with its Lascannon taking the last HP off the Baneblade, and it goes BOOM!

Meanwhile, I deepstrike some Hammernators in front of their HQ, which was some fortifications with a bunch of characters in it. It had a couple of Punisher Cannons on it, and those Terminators tanked well over a hundred shots without losing more than three guys. They, unfortunately, did not destroy the buildings.

It was just an awesome intro to 40k-big, bonkers, lots of stuff exploding and things happening, and some really nice people.

Clocks for the clockmaker! Cogs for the cog throne!

I played my first game of 9th(and any game since COVID) a little while ago.

My Orks vs Necrons 1k points. It was amazing! We were both so damn happy to just be playing. Highlight of the game is when he destroyed my battlewagon and it exploded. I didn't have the cp to Kareen! it, so it decimated my left flank. Took my storm boyz that were nearby to 1 model and wiped the remaining mega nobz. Pure carnage!

I can't wait for my next game.

I've had a game or two a month with folks in my club the last few months, and looking forward to getting to an event soon.

I've had nothing but fantastic experiances with 9th edition so far. Been playing Chaos Knights mostly my last few games.

My last game was against my buddies Space Marines (Iron Hands successor), and my Tyrant and his Astraeus super heavy dueled across the table from each other for two turns before my Tyrant prevailed, that was a pretty epic battle-in-a-battle.

We had a fun crusade narrative finisher game, a siege upon Terra itself!

This was a narrative game with matched play list building but more models/rules as the game went on to show the mounting height of combat. The real highlight was me unleashing 10 Custodes Shield Captains (The inner sanctum guard) all with warlord traits and relics.

9th has proven to be a fantastic system for both pick up games and crazy over the top narrative and I adore it for that.

And before you ask, Chaos did infact win and are currently attempting to breach the Emperor's inner chambers, whilst a blinding white light is building up behind the doors...

Not been many opportunities to play against other people so I've been beavering away at solo-play missions, for both 40K and Kill Team.

Its lead to creating a new Chaos Knight house( Sphiranx ) which has been a lot of fun on the hobby side and shown that 40K can actually be fun and affordable. Who would have thought that, eh?

My last game was inspired by a mission from Crysis 2 where the player joins a small unit of soliders who are stalked by a nasty battle-walker thing. The Guardians and Banshees were at the mercy of a warglaive armiger, but by adding traps, crawl-through spaces and collectable reaper missile launchers, the villianous Sphiranx Wardog finally bit the dust.

The beauty of it was generating a behaviour table and also taking several playthroughs to fine tune.
