Hi all!
So I’m an absolute newcomer to warhammer. I have diddly squat, nothing, nada.
Been interested in it for years never taken the plunge.
Ok so first off the recent Hatchett partworks magazines have just been released and appears to be a good entry point.
Hopefully I don’t offend anyone with my questions as I have no clue.
1) Do plenty of adults participate in this hobby?
2) Is the magazine a good start point or a poor money grabbing opportunity?
3) If I go down the magazine route will the miniature sets be standalone or tie in to the 40k niche therefore playable against existing GW players and armies?
4) Am I having a midlife crisis? Ha ha.
Sorry for the nature of this post. Any advice, tips and general wisdom gratefully received.

1) Yes, the majority of people who play warhammer are adults
2) Well, how do you like the looks of Primaris Space Marines and Necrons? It's a fine way to get into the game a bit at a time, but if you think the Tyranids look most interesting, or the Tau, or the Eldar, etc, the magazine will not do anything for you there, and you will end up with a crap-ton of Space Marines and Necrons.
3) They are regular 40k units and you can play with them in their regular armies, that being mostly Space Marines and Necrons. I think there are some Adeptus Mechanicus late in the magazine.
4) Impossible to say

So, yes, adults play, enough that you won't be the only one.
The magazine is a decent place to start for models, it's got some good stuff in their, and marines are the traditional "starter" faction with strong units that are forgiving of mistakes.
If you've never played before, GW stores are back doing starter games again. Theirs a store in derby so maybe head down and ask if you can try a game and see if you like it, speak to the store guy about your choices etc

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Hello and welcome!
You've had some comprehensive answers already, but would just chip in and say regarding the magazines - do you like the look of the models? It's only really a good deal if that's what you actually want to play with...
As for the midlife crisis - well, it'll be cheaper than a sports car! OK, maybe not a lot cheaper...

Thanks for the welcomes and responses from you all. Regarding the looks of the 40k models, I do like the looks of them, also age of Sigmar. So after your responses regarding the models and watching a couple of youtube videos, I can see how subbing to the mag would be beneficial to start. A nice introduction and a way to get started. Then probably pick and choose special units that I like. Are all game types 40k, age of sigmar etc equally popular? Or is dependent on on area a bit? Thanks again for the advice. . 40k is the most popular wargame out there so the probability to find someone to play is very high. AoS is less popular but still more than majority of other games even just because it carries GW sign on it. All this said you should not have much troubles to find players of any age you prefer to battle with. This of course should not discourage you to try other game systems which although less popular can, and often have, much better rules than GW games. Anyway try what you like and let none tell you what is good or bad. Collect, make conversions, paint etc. whatever makes you happy. Enjoy the hobby and welcome on board

If you want to find adults who play, try reading out to local comic book stores and game stores. Many already have communities that play on a regular basis. If you live in a big enough city, you may also have access to an official Warhammer store.
Alternatively you could try to convince a few friends to jump in with you. This is a lot of folks' only option who may be in more remote or rural areas.

Welcome to the hobby! You'll love it, while your wallet will hate it.
1. Seems to be the case, it's been years since I've seen anyone under 18 (other than my son whom I'm teaching) play.
2. If you're into Space Marine or Necrons, then yup, it sure is. Otherwise not so much. My advise for picking an army (especially if you're on a budget) is to find one that you make a connection with either thematically or strategically. Armies power levels rise and fall (expect Space Marines which are always in the range of good-fantastic) so playing something you enjoy will pan out better long term than playing something that is the hot new thing.
3. This one was answered already, but yeah, much of it is repackaged from the Indomitus box and has lots of good stuff in it, plus a lot of extra at a great price. The terrain will help you with your first few boards too.
4. LoL, that's for you to say, but I wouldn't assume so.

one thing to consider with the observed age groups of players is that thier might be a selection bias based on WHEN you play.
for example, most UK games workshops used to run a "games night" of some sort, normally on a thursday, where they would stay open to 8-9PM, which would attract a older, more mature crowd (who work during the day, and have are busy at weekends with family and other hobbies) than you'd find on a Saturday afternoon, when the teenagers are free to come in and find a game Obviously, no one is playing pick up games in the store right now with The Late Unpleasantness, but still, the where can effect who your playing.
agian, i would recommend speaking to the local GW/other wargaming store staff member. almost all of them are full time hobbyists as well, and while they will of coruse try to sell you stuff, in my experience they tend to take long view on these matters and will try and sell you on the hobby as a whole, not inherently the New Hotness (TM), and they will be very willing to talk about next steps, good tips and tricks etc. I believe GW is currently doing a new players reward programme in the UK which has some physical rewards in it, stuff like dice, a small carry case, some branded merch, etc.

Thank you everyone who responded and gave me great advice. Very much appreciated, so thank you again. Definitely so many great models and endless scope to play with. I’ve been soaking up as much info as possible. Watching some great YouTube videos etc. Off to my local shop when I’ve got some spare time. Excited to get started. Thanks again.
