As per the title, the recent article says 'coming later this year'......do we take that as before Xmas 2021 or are they making a slight mistake and they mean later in 2022?

I am looking to start GSC and was going to get stuff for Xmas but if a lot of new models etc are on the horizon, I will most likely wait and buy other stuff this Xmas.

I'd give a hesitant "yes" to it being out in 2021, but I'd also point out that nothing indicates a huge wave of models is coming for GSC - as far as we're aware that this point, the new character is it.

I might advise being cautious about going for Brood Brother (i.e., Imperial Guard) stuff until you have the new book in your hands, though.

TL; DR - Probably in 2021, but until it shows in the "on pre-order next week" article on WHC, we won't know for sure. Magic 8-Ball currently says lots of new models unlikely.

GSC are coming out with Custodes in December. Don't expect other models except the one previewed.

Not been back with 40k for too long but I thought when they released a Codex, it normally came with quite a few new releases?


I noticed Tau comes out early next year and told a friend it should have new releases coming at same time but maybe I have this wrong

We can't be 100% sure it comes in december but at least GW's intention is atm it's on december. Of course UK being in situation it is delays could happen. GW's schedule been delayed in all sort of ways and GW can change schedule within months of supposed release but probably safe atm. It's just month and spare at most before december release date.

Model wise there's the 1 model and that's it coming by the look of it. So unless you want to chase newest hotness in terms of army list you can buy whatever you fancy and still use it.

Codexes sometimes come with models, sometime single model, sometimes nothing. Single hero model to accompany isn't at all unusual. Big releases are less common.

Yeah, Genestealer Cults had a whole new model range only 5 years ago. They're not going to be replaced yet...

They sped up releases for 8th and 9th. Now you're getting 1 HQ model, if that, unless you luck into one of 3-4 bigger release slots per year, and even these are getting rarer and rarer thanks to covid and brexgak. GW can't even finish releasing Stormcast that were supposed to be out in summer...

Stormcast were announced early enough for october and apart from dragons have got all. Dunno where you got the summer.

The pattern for 9th appears to be:

-if it's a light release, you get one model, and you might get two codexes in one month (see GK vs Tsons)

-if it's a heavy release, you get 1 codex in one month (see Orks).

Look up AoS 2nd edition and 40K 8th edition, the waves for both armies were dumped together with starter in summer set back then not held back 5+ months and even then not released fully yet. According to you GW put dragons in the SE book for all to see plus big ad campaign for them only to sit on them for half a year while all competitors selling dragon models of any kind just print free money in meantime?

And in that first case, it's often a two faction battle box with a new character model for each of the factions along with the two factions Codexes.

Your safest stuff to buy are the broodcoven box and maybe some acolytes, everything else is up in the air at the moment but you’re 100% going to need your main HQs and some solid troops.

There's no quarantee they would be coming on summer. GW never ever EVER said summer for SCE.

They kinda did, the now edited articles said the SCE and Orruks would be released in August iirc and they failed to do that. the Chaos book was promised for October around the same time, that didn't happen. On both of theses occasions they edited out the dates from the historic articles, let the window they gave expire then after dropped a "whoops sorry coming soon tm".

Depends on the update, some factions get a nice update with a number of new kits, most only get a single model. Usually you can tell based off of the release schedule, if two codexes are coming out in the same month, they are only getting a single new mini(typically a character) each. This is the case with GSC which are coming out alongside Custodes. If its only one book in a month, then they tend to (but not always) get a more comprehensive update. We don't know what the deal is with Tau yet, but the only real rumor we have is that there will be a plastic Darkstrider mini and that seems to be it.
