While I don't know what state Space Marines are in the current meta, this just strikes me as a cash grab of the worst kind. What is the point of it, and do others here think that it is either a good or bad move on GW's part?
For the same reason we're now in dire need of a new Sister's book:
GW piles endless nerfs on older books for the entire duration of the edition until they're completely unplayable.

I don't want to have to buy a second marine book in as many years. The thing had so many options it can't possibly need more! What I would like is updated supplements for the 8th edition chapters - in my case specifically white scars - to add some more flavour for crusade.

Minis last for decades, but rules they can cycle over year after year.
Not if you quit playing because of excessive rules churn.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

So I'm going to point out that the quoted thread does NOT say there is mention of a 2.0 SM dex ANYWHERE in the vid.
It says 8th ed supplements are getting redone.
Caveat: I haven't watched the video- I'm not in a space where I can do that right now.
I think early in the edition, GW announced they were always planning to release updates to the 8th ed supplements. And while I don't want to sit through an other endless parade of Marines, if the other dexes are already out, it's not that big a deal. They could use updating to be consistent with other 9th ed books, and they'd finally get Crusade content.
I'm not saying they GW WON'T release a 2.0 dex- even I'm not that optomistic/ naive/ hopeful. But I will say that the rumour that it is going to happen appears to be based on nothing.
Eighth ed supplements updated? Yeah, pretty sure that's in the cards, but I'm almost sure GW already told us that when the SM dex dropped and they announced that former stand-alone dexes were becoming supplements.

I cant wait for CSM to get the same treatment they got in 7th.
Traitor legions drop, for the first time in a long time Traitor legions felt really good, not over powered (minus tsons) but good, then GW just nuked it all.

That's such gak. The company stocks have absolutely nothing to do with the release schedule and even if they did, the last year saw a massive inflation due to lockdowns caused by Covid increasing the company's profits and selling power. Even in its own financial reports and investor statements, GW has confirmed that the company doesn't expect this boom to continue as people return to normal life and lose the huge amounts of free time they had during 2020/21. BTW, GW stocks haven't even gone down to their pre-pandemic levels of February 2020.
Where the heck are you getting your info that any of what you've said is remotely true?
Uh, companies sugar-coat bad news. Whilst yes, you do have a point they have failed to capitalise on all their gains. From memory their stock price dropped around 30%, which is inexcusable for many other entertainment or luxury industries.
They know SM 2.0 will sell. So they're bringing them forward instead of doing it after every other faction gets a codex release. The current SM book suffers a lot from being an early codex. It's more 8.5 edition than a true 9th edition codex. Which is a shame, because Necrons are pretty much in that same spot and are being neglected, again.

Let me repeat that after 2 years, GW stock has still not dropped to its pre-pandemic peak. The company is still making money, especially now that licencing is taking off. This nonsense notion that GW is in trouble and needs a cash injection is such gak. It is hurting my brain trying to even comprehend how stupid this statement is.

The current Marine dex isn't an 8.5 dex lmao.
People talk about codex creep while ignoring that the current dex has had about 20 different nerfs. That's why it's dropped down in power.
Can you honestly look at most of the book and see something majorly wrong with the core rules or statlines or relics or WLT's or stratagems or chapter tactics? Yes, there is bloat and irrelevant units, but when you've got 100+ datasheets that's always going to happen and not something a new codex will fix. This isn't the Necron codex where there still exist a large swathe of problematic unfixable-through-points statlines and non-functional army-wide special rules.
What they haven't managed to figure out is sensible ways to cost most of the stuff within it. And even then you have such problematic and potentially powerful units that they sort of require steep points costs in order to not break the game. Remember 15 Plasceptors? Yeah, that's why they cost 60 points now. Because the unit is absurd.
And this isn't even getting into the issues with making every chapter its own supplement while not doing individual points costs for each of them. Terminators too many points for your Ultramarines? Sorry, Deathwing exists so they have to be that. And that's also not something a new Codex will fix either.
