Hey everyone,
I have been on a warhammer hiatus since 8th edition dropped. I really disliked losing things like armor value, templates, scale change and the overall digital sculpt direction of the newer 40k models. I know it will make some warhammer players want to throw up, but i really enjoyed 7th edition. Since then I have been collecting OOP models and 7th edition codexes for various factions, but I havent been able to itch the scratch of actually wanting to play the game with other experienced players.
I feel dumb for not investing in HH back when 7th was still around, but I would not have been financially able invest in it back then anyway. Now I am on the verge of buying a full HH army, but it looks like there is going to be a large change to HH soon. So i am wondering is it a bad time to invest? Should I wait?
I dont want to make the mistake of investing over $1000 into models/upgrade sprews/zone mortalis tiles that are about to get huge rules changes similar to how 7th changed into 8th. I have seen youtubers dancing around talking about HH rules changes, but i havent dug up any leaks, and even if i did there is no garentee that those leaked rules will actually make it to HH2.0
Do you think HH is about to have a drastic change similar to what 8th edition did? When do you expect HH 2.0 to drop?
I appreciate any advice and thank you all for your time.

From all the leaks/rumours the changes to the new edition won't be 7th to 8th drastic. The core game is functionally going to be based off the 7th edition ruleset, with things like WS charts, armour facings, AP, etc remaining. With that said there will be enough new additions and changes to make it distinct with Reactions, everything having a Movement stat, so on and will necessitate them giving all the existing units a pass over in terms of rules. So in terms of 'rules changing' it would be more like an army getting it's 6th edition to 7th edition codex, rather than going from it's 7e codex to the 8e Index. All things are pointing to an Adepticon announcement, probably with a release around May-July. Personally I would wait until at least the Adepticon reveal before committing too much. The stuff that's probably safe to buy are the MK3/4 plastics and the Tartaros/Caraprachtii Terminator plastics. We've already seen the existing Cataprachtii in the leaks and unless you really want the upscaled MK6 plastics, they probably won't touch MK4/3 again until at least MK2 is in plastic. After that I'd assume most of the Legion-specific stuff is safe to buy. With the new scale we may see some of the older, shorter stuff get an update (which is mostly DG/SoH/WE/EC stuff) but that's total guesswork on my end. Things that have a good chance to go plastic are any of the generic vehicles. There's rumours floating around about plastic Sicarans, Deimos Rhinos and Predators but tbh people have been saying that since 2016. It wouldn't be a big surprise if we saw plastic Assault Marines and Jetbikes at some point either. In summary I would advise waiting since Adepticon is less than a month away. If you're absolutely chomping at the bits to buy something, the plastic MK3/4, plastic Terminators and your Legion-specific models are probably safe. Everything else I would wait for, since even if the models aren't getting updated their rules may change enough that they end up in F-tier anyway.

what Arbitrator done said, although scale creep may be worth keeping in mind, the mk3/4 dudes are on par with regular first born whereas the rumoured mk6 from the new box look rescaled to "not quite primaris" I think Volrak ? did a youtube about fafnir being this scale but as a HQ that might just be the reason

The rescale is what worries me most. Its the main reason i stopped playing. Last thing i want is to blow a small fortune trying to get into a game that is not like current 40k, just for it to become exactly like current 40k by the time i finish painting.

The rescale looks to be about the modern CSM size, so not as glaring on the newer sculpts but the Book 1/2 stuff do come up short (literally) next to them.

The optimist in me says go for it and grab stuff that you like. HH is a great setting and the game currently is very good.
The pessimist says that the rumours I've seen are IMO bad and the game is about to be upended in favour of traditional GW tactics vis-a-vis 40k/AoS.
The problem is, it's March. We've heard literally nothing official about a new edition of HH from GW and we've had blurry leaked images and supposed rulebook leaks. The biggest problem you will face is having fellow players unless you have a solid group of dedicated people who are interested in the game. My old gaming group went from 11 people to 6 in a very short period of time because people didn't actually want to play HH, they just wanted to follow the crowd. If you have a group then it should be easier and you can make the collective choice to stick with the current rules or move to the next ones.

I would personally say this. Find the legion/army you like right now.
And start getting stuff for it you think is cool. HH is/can be a lot more thematically based and you can show up with pretty fluffy armies so long as they are semi competent and still hang.
Use this time to get some basic ideas of what you want for an army, and what appeals to you, and then just get a few kits and find you how you want to paint/base them. You are going to have a lot of time here.
From the changes that have been leaked, and with what credible sources we have, so far we can assume that the traditional mechanics of the game are still there, templates, scatter, wound and hit charge, av, and old AP all exist as they were/are in 7th.
The biggest changes mostly are there for melee, the reaction leaks, and dreads going to wounds not AV, among other things.
It does seem though that HH will in fact retain its more, dramatic/thematic style of play over 8th/9th more strict and rigid set of rules.
