Reaching out to the knowledge base of the Dakka Dakka forums.

I have just started on a set of Aeldari Guardians and have gone for the Saim-Hann faction…cos, who doesn’t like a bit of red!!

I primed them with a Mephiston Red spray and followed that up with a coating of Flesh Tearers Red/Contrast Medium (1pt FTR - 5pt CM). Applied to the models with one of Citadels synthetic M shade brush.

Now, 7 have a Matte finish….3 have a Glossy finish (unsure if the attached is clear enough).

Would anyone have any ideas as to why they have turned out differently and suggestions on how best to resolve. Also, judging by images, I think they should be matte??

Usually, getting a glossy finish with paints that are supposed to be matte indicates that the paint needs more mixing. Do you know if the 3 glossy ones were the first or last you did?

The glossy ones were the first I did. I completed the others the following day.

if you want to make them all similar, then best is to lightly coat all with a quality spray matte finish. If you have an airbrush, this is best of course but if not, be sure to use the spray in a place with the right temperatures, not too much humidity, do not apply too thick! and of course, shake more than you think that you need to ...

Thanks!! I may need to give that a go. Sadly, not gone the airbrush route…but may pass them to a friend who has.

It's likely due to a difference in the mixing of the constituent parts of the contrast paint. The glossy ones probably got more medium than pigment and vice versa. Just blast then with a spray matte varnish and it should even out all the finishes. You don't need an airbrush, just buy a rattlecan of matte varnish.

Paint not being mixed properly is the likely culprit.

Glossy finish usually happens when you use the separated top layer of the paint.
