I typically don't play in stores- I'd rather have a stereo in the game room and the ability to tweak rules as my opponent(s) and I see fit. I've been playing since 89 and I can count the times I've played in public spaces one one hand.

But now GW is offering swag for those who do play in stores, and there are Narrative events as well as Matched play events. You can win your ticket, travel and accommodations to an event, which is pretty cool, though quite frankly I don't expect I've got a shot at winning, since winning is never a priority for me.

But I still feel like I might check this out, or at least inquire at the store.

I’ve been trying to get down to my local GW for crusade games they are running, would be interested in more organized play.

Assuming it fits my schedule.

Yeah, hopefully stores are smart and make the rewards centered around participation instead of straight up winning.

Thats a dangerous road to travel for an organizer. Speaking from experience - you get a LOT of drama stirred up from competitive players when prizes are participation awards and not tied to performance. The only way you can skirt that is if the official entity (GW) gives a prize outline that features participation over winning, because then the rage is redirected to GW and not the organizer.

let them complain, as long as its clearly posted that the prize won't be performance based, they can whine as much as they want

If they're following the Underworlds format, there's a set of cards/rewards that are supposed to be doled out to anyone who shows up for game nights and then a second set of rewards specifically for the Big Event at the end of a "season".

What you have to worry about isn't "straight up winning" from seal clubbing, it's that the scheduled events did not tend to have a "closed to outsiders" caveat--so someone can entirely avoid playing in the runup to the event and then just show up on day of to swoop in for some of the prizes that drove people to actually be involved in the first damn place.

The other thing is that prizes for participating, when somehow gradated, will somehow fall on the friends of the organizer, almost every time...

I guess I just live in a bubble of sunshine, but our tourneys have always had the prizes awarded on a draw basis at the end. The top general gets a crisp high-five and their name on the trophy. I haven't seen any shenanigans with the prizes, even when provided by a company (I TO'd the Flames of War tourneys for a while).

But of course, your mileage may vary.

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

I think our flames of war community was pretty chill.

It was always the sigmar and 40k community that were angry and wanting to fight in the parking lot if you didn't do things "right".

A flames of war army with options, bought at the store, no store credit, no promos, no nothing. Cost around 250$. That is 1/4 of what a w40k army costs on avarge. Spread over 3-6 months a FoW army isn't that expensive. On the other hand a w40k army costs as much as 2 and a half salaries here. Which makes people enter the unchill state very fast. Specially with the nerfs and rules changes happening at random to random armies, units etc and a lot of people not being able to buy an army properly.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

An who spends 1k$ on a 40k army will still be an if they only spend $250 on FoW.

I am assuming the orky thing is censorship for a bad word. What ever it is, I see no coralation between either things. They are clearly an independent thing of what ever you play one or the other, or even not play any games at all.

What I am saying that it is a lot more easy to be relaxed about something that costs 250$ or less, then it is to be the same level of relaxed as 1000$. I understand that because of income difference , that may not be as obvious to people living in the US. But you can scale it up, I am sure. Cars for example. I heard unbelievable stories of super cheap send hand cars. Which actually drive. I am sure paint damage on those is going to make a person less agitated, then getting the same kind of damage on their Italian importated sports car.

Then thats even more reason to avoid 40k. If high prices make people lose their mind if they are suddenly not the cutting edge of optimal, thats another big red flag.

I have seen what people do to other people over a set of grim monoliths, getting bend. I don't think I have ever seen anyone get angry over anything in Wampire the Masquared, besides one guy dropping multiplayer because elephant vampires from africa bleeding him every turn.
Dune, the fan continued version, super chill, people print their decks borrow or straight up give decks to other. No one gets angry over anything. People playing MtG China prints, calm and collected. On the other hand with my own eyes I saw someone punch a dude, because their 3 booster had nothing, and the next dude pulled a pre nerf Foil Oko.

In fact there seem to be a lot of similarities between the MtG and w40k sceen. At least here.

I have said this for many years and I know from the mouths of people that work with the company that it is intentional that they went after that type of player (the MtG player) which is how the game started morphing into something that resembled a Combo based CCG.

Define roided up? I go and pass any check required for me to be taken by the wrestling assosiation. I do take supplements and like everyone I have asthma, but I ain't no body builder. But yeah there are a lot of players who are in the police, military or border guard and they often buff up, specially when they are past 35-40. Same with those in hooligan clubs. I don't think I ever saw a mr Olympia sized person playing w40k, but I guess it could be different in other countries.

And people can get really angry without the use of steroids.

I never thought about it that way. But it does make sense. Stuff like stratagem and some army rules like the ad mecha or nid ones feel a lot like MtG.
