Played with these for the first time last night and oh my word - I'm in love.

Game was Aeldari vs Grey Knights and it was the swingiest thing ever! It felt how 40k (in my opinion) should feel.

For anybody who doesn;t know about these cards, see below

Spoiler:
theyre similar to Open War cards, but in a matched play setting.

You draw the deployment map, the mission breifing, the mission special rules one after the other (and there are lots of them).

Objectives are placed on the table by the players which also feels very immersive, but the BEST thing about these games is the way that secondary objectives work.

Instead of picking secondaries pre-game you draw 3 secondary cards at the start. After you complete one ONCE you score 5 points, discard the card and draw a new one.

If you don't like a particular secondary you can spend 1cp to replace one at the start of your turn or replace multiple for free at the end.

The secondary objectives made the game unpredictable. There was no getting to turn 3 and being able to predict the outcome of the game because you didn't know what secondaries you would pull from the deck, and of course they change every turn as they're completed / discarded.

Likewise, you couldn't build a list specifically to score secondaries, and army specific secondaries that you basically score just for turning up are out of the game entirely.

You can't put all your chips on stopping your opponent from scoring an objective because they have the option of discarding it at the start of their own turn and simply picking a new one.

No doubt, this may not be up everybody's street - i expect the competitive gamers among the hobby will be less keen, but for casual friendly games it was incredibly refreshing.

Keen to hear other people's experiences with them!

Why don't people just build armies that kill 2/3 of 4/5th of the opposing army in two turn and then solitare what ever secondaries they get for the rest of the game, without the opponent not really being able to do anything about it with 1/3 of 1/5th of starting points?

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Because not everyone lives in the Thunderdome.

These seem like a shout to pick up, maybe get some wins in this edition before I turn into a saltwater mammal.

I understand the words, but I don't understand what they suppose to mean. What does anti thunder storm systems have to do with shouting durning an edition and sweet water recovery from salt water?

The Thunderdome is a Madmax reference- he's talking about the fact that you live in a hostile meta; you've told us all about it, so we're aware of what games are like where you play.

The "shout out" just means that GW put out a product that recognizes and tries to address the need for more casual pick-up games.

And I think the salt-water mammal is a reference to "baby seals" which is how we often describe players with armies that seem to get beaten again and again. You know, because baby seals are the very definition of defenseless.

He's saying that the randomness might get him enough wins to not be classified a baby seal.

The tempest of war deck is the best thing to happen to casual 40k since burning of 7th edition. I don’t want to play any other way.

I actually really enjoyed maelstrom of war for pickup games back in the day. They added some whimsy to the game.

Totally useless for competitive play, but not every game needs to be tournament practice. Glad these are good.

Goddammit Jake. Your metaphor is way better than mine was. I was just meaning I was going to become reliant on the salt generated from losing all my games but that's so much better.
