Hi folks. New here, I'll mainly just be posting photos of whatever I just finished painting so y'all can tell me what I'm doing wrong (don't expect that to help though, I'm fully embracing the 'it's fine to be bad at something so long as you're still having fun' ethos).
Quick summary: Started playing GW games with Space Hulk (no, not the one you're thinking of, the older one, no the one older than that), and via the occasional White Dwarf and random miniature (there were rules for playing Guardsmen in Space Hulk in some ancient WD issue weren't there, or was I imagining that? I distinctly remember going at genestealers with penal legion human bombs; which seems doubly unfair for the poor guys) - and the old The Lost and the Damned hardcover, which I loved reading even though I had no idea what any of the rules meant - became vaguely aware of 40k in general. Then GW opened up a shop in Sydney, and took an awful lot of my pocket money. I played Marines, Craftworlders, Dark Eldar, Sisters of Battle, spent a long time devising intricately interwoven backstories for them all and significantly less actually playing any games, took turns at Necromunda (for free, the GW shop did a last-man-standing contest with the game box as a reward, and the dice went my way for about the only time ever - they made plenty of money back off me from all the Eschers) and Gorkamorka, and eventually the highlight of being, by pure fluke, in the right place at the right time when Paul Sawyer needed some pages done, got to write the Index Astartes: First Founding article for the Emperor's Children, which was pretty cool since there wasn't a whole lot already written about them pre-fall so I got to run wild (within reason). Eventually I drifted out of the hobby - this would've been around the tail end of 3rd edition - and besides keeping my old armies on a shelf to look fondly at from time to time, didn't give it much thought.
Then I wandered into the Warhammer store, as they're called now for whatever reason, at the beginning of the year just out of nostalgia, and got to thinking, it's kind of weird I never had an Emperor's Children army (I had developed a Slaaneshi sorceress queen, but just as a recurring antagonist for the Craftworlders, specifically the one she had a crush on, super-awkward for both of them, but funny), and before you know it I've got a stack of boxes (and an even bigger stack of codices, because even though I've got no intention of ever playing the game, I can't resist books) and am trying to remember which end of the brush does what - which loops us back around to posting photos, which I'll get around to shortly in the appropriate forum. Meanwhile, hi everyone.

Welcome! That's quite the journey. Sadly we don't have lots of new Emperor's Children minis at the moment, although daemons got quite a bit of love as you've surely seen. Rumor is that the next Chaos book after Knights, CSM, and World Eaters is a solo Emperor's Children book though!
I love hearing about the lore between people's custom armies. I remember reading battle reports on TauOnline and this Ork/IG player had pages of story behind them. Mostly would they/won't they between a female commissar and the commander IIRC. That inspired me with some of my armies, minus the romance part.

Thank you. Yeah I've noticed - I got a couple of the Noise Marine upgrade packs not long ago, otherwise I'm just working with regular CSM mixed with parts from daemonettes, Sisters, Eschers, those murder-elves from Fantasy, and so on; very conversion-heavy army, the only unmodified miniature I've done thus far was one regular daemonette to see how the colour scheme I had in mind for them would look. It's not so much an Emperor's Children army as a Slaaneshi warband that has Emperor's Children in it, along with whoever or whatever else joined up, so I'm not feeling the absence of a proper boxed set that badly. Fingers crossed though, would be nice to see.

It was the reverse for me, I was always focusing on romance (this was back when Xena was big, so y'know, inspiration) - kind of what led to me drifting out of the hobby, since my writing ended up going off on tangents that had nothing to do with my armies, so actually buying and painting miniatures didn't seem that important. I like to pretend it's all canonical, solely because of one passing reference to my chaos queen I snuck into WD, and all the armies are connected six-degrees-of-separation style (that's blatantly untrue, of course). Nowadays I feel like I'm in a good spot lore-wise, since she can genuinely believe herself to be a sweetheart while also being a walking crime against humanity, and the cognitive dissonance isn't a bug, it's a feature, because chaos; inevitably I'll be rambling all about them once I start posting photos (once I take some photos).
