My son has been interested in Warhammer for a little while now. After watching some YouTube videos with him, my wife an I decided to get the Dominion box set for his birthday since he wanted to start with Age of Sigmar. We saw it included the rules book and enough miniatures for two players so it seemed like a great place to start. Big bonus that he wanted to start with the Stormcast army. He was very excited to jump in and start putting them all together. Glancing over the included rule book we realized we were in over our heads, so back to YouTube. I saw this site recommended in a few different videos which is why I decided to join. You all seem to offer a lot of help and advice to new players. I have some experience painting miniatures from back when I used to play Dungeons and Dragons. So I plan to try and help get him started with that. Hopefully I'll have more to share with you all once we get a few of these assembled.

You know, it's been so long I don't even know how I found out about Dakka. It's cool people are recommending it still in an age of Discord, Facebook, and... whatever else people are using.

Don't be afraid to look around to try to find some locals, a few are bound to be willing to teach new players.

Are you playing orcs, some other faction, or are you leaving the AoS playing up to your son?

Right now I am "trying" to play with the Orc army that was included with the dominion box set. It been a lot of fun learning a new game, while at the same time, trying to teach my son. We have not finished painting our armies yet. Which I feel is a horrible thing to say after seeing all the awesome work you all have done. I still need to swing by a hobby store and pick up some paints. I plan to let him paint both armies since they are his technically. I'll just help show him a few tricks I learned awhile ago painting Dungeon and Dragon minis.

I have been asking around to see if we could watch a few games live and perhaps have someone watch us and offer tips, but it seems like AOS isn't very big in my area. 40k has a much larger scene around me. My son really likes the high fantasy look of AOS so we are going to stick with it and keep looking.

If I was going to jump in and purchase my own army it would either be Sylvaneth or Fyreslayers. A few of the videos we watched featured these armies and they both look very interesting. Plus the models look like a challenge to build and paint. Right now though, I want to focus on helping him get started, this is his first hobby he has shown a lot of interest in and I think it will be something fun we both can explore. I just hope he enjoys painting like I do because it seems like we have a lot to do.

He is already researching what he need to improve his army of Stormcast Eternals. So I have been trying to come up with extra chores he can do over to summer to earn some money. Right now he is looking at Stormdrake Guards and/or some Prosecutors. Having look into the prices of these, I am going to have to find a lot of extra chores haha.

Sorry to ramble on, I just get excited to see him excited. Thank you for welcomes, I'll try to share some of our minis once we paint them.

Welcome to Dakka, seems like you're well on your way into the hobby already.

I'm a 40k player myself, so I can't speak to the specifics of AoS, however, the best way I've found to both learn and/or teach any big tabletop game like these is to not worry about the minutia at the beginning, just get the basics down and slowly build off of that, adding layers of complexity as you go until you've got the hang of it.

Best of luck to you, my son's just getting into 40k so I know how much fun you must be having sharing a hobby.

Thank you, I mentioned in a different post that we have been having some trouble finding an AOS group in our area, most people seem to play 40k. We are going to try playing a few games with a shop owner in hopes to drum up some interest. One shop offered to let us use their 40k armies to learn and use during open play. I guess we'll just keep going down this rabbit hole.

By the way I wanted to ask, what are the numbers in your signature?
