Subject: Better Big Robot Army - Knights or Tau?
|
 |
The Last Chancer Who Survived
|
So I want to do a big robot army. I already have some Knight & Armiger models that I haven't built yet, but I keep wondering if maybe Tau would work better for the theme I want to have because they have more variety of models .. I've been reading up a lot on knight lists and stuff and they seem like they can be pretty tough, but what about Tau? Would an army that's all crisis suits and larger models work well? I didn't want to have any regular troops on the ground, just bots, that's why I was gonna go with Knights, but I keep coming back to check out the Tau models... What would you rather start for a new army? Just looking for some ideas before I start buying more stuff...

Define 'big'. If it's something that is Boxnought sized as minimum, Space Marines funnily enough will work better than Tau thanks to wide variety of plastic dreads, from Ironclad/Boxnought through Contemptors to Redemptors and Leviathans, while Tau are much more limited in this regard if we exclude smaller suits. Also, SM have extra bonus of being easily allied to Knights, so what you spent so far isn't wasted if you grab a few kits...

As far as big goes, I was thinking for Tau it would be crisis suits or bigger, no regular sized guys on foot.
My original idea was actually to do a dreadnought army, but I couldn't find a good space marine HQ choice to match the theme, unless I missed something. Figured I was gonna need at least 1. So anyway that's why I switched gears and thought just Knights would be a better way to go

How bout a CSM Dread/Knight army with a Warpsmith as HQ?

Have you considered Adeptus Titanicus? For big stompy robot action, the starter set is highly recommended. In fact, you can play most games with that set alone(1,250 points), with only the odd extra purchase to bump up to 2,000 points. Even though the models are in a smaller scale, the smallest titan still comes on an 80mm base...
Getting back to 40K, I'd stick with Knights, as the Armigers are decently priced( works out at £26.25 each ) and each knight( big and small ) can be jazzed up as it's own character. And being as you already have the models( not exactly cheap, although they workout cost efficient in the long run ), you now only need the codex.
Urgh, I'm not a fan of large models gamewise, but I'm thinking of a Knight purchase; Either a supporting Questoris or Dominus free/dreadblade, or a Wraith Knight for my Ulthwe army...argh! Decisions, they mock me!

Are you willing to consider Adeptus Mechanicus? You can run a Man of Iron list...

Haven't heard of the main of iron list, how does that work? I don't have the ad mech codex but wouldn't mind mixing in some of those models... well anything but their googley-eye bots

I don't know much about Tau, but building and painting Knights is good fun. They are really great models to put together and there's a huge canvas for you to add your own stuff. Be it freehand painting, patterns or conversions.
I'm sure the same arguments can be made for Tau now that I read my own post
Anyway. I vote knights

In this vein, have you already considered and decided against the fighty robot game: Battletech [and Alpha Strike]?
It might be worth a try if you're looking for a robot game.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

30k mechanicus might be up your alley.
But probably not your wallet.
Unless you like to convert and run Dark mech.
But it requires a 30k community.
(can baseline include knights and got a lot of stompy robots for troops and bigger, including cyborgs).
Bonus point, if you do a good job can double as a 40k mechanicus army.

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH. |

Alas with max 6 elites soon loyalist dread army got lot harder. 3 leviathan(halving cp available) and 3 redemptors 3 lib dreads gets about 1700 pts.

Yeah I'm just gonna stick with the knights I have, and I still have a bunch of Space Dwarfs to finish painting before I start on the knights anyway. I always did want to do a big bot Tau army so maybe someday I'll try that anyway, if my wallet will let me. I was just hoping for more model variety in the Knights, like as far as plastic kits there's really just 2 knights and armigers. I don't really wanna get into Forge World models because the plastics are already expensive enough. Hopefully if we get a new edition next year they will get a new codex soon after maybe with a couple other new models or some updates.

Battletech looks good and I'm kinda curious, but the starter set has yet to appear at my usual stockist. One day it'll be back in stock, I'm sure.
For our friend, BT is certainly worth a look.

Battletech was the first minis game I ever played, back in like 1990. It was great. But, I don't really have any buddies that play it, I'd love to get into modern BT, but I wanna stick with what my friends are playing most for now, since I rarely get to play much as it is.

I've dediced Knights & Armigers as I like their look. Two Knights and seven Armigers at the 2000 pt level is a decent army to go.
Tau not for me.
