I've read on a forum that Glade Guard have STR 4 shooting when shooting at close range, yet I cannot find this stated anywhere in the army book. I have looked at both the special rules for Glade Guard and the Asrai Longbow. Additionally, I am unclear as to how Kindreds and Spites work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking for the same just yesterday.
I can't find it either, I cant remember if this was a 7th update somewhere or End Times content.

Ok, just checked 1d4chan, a good site for WHFB lore.
S4 short range was an ability given to Glade Guard in 6th.
In 8th all asrai longbows got armour piercing instead, at all ranges and for all units and characters.
You boost the damage output either by buying special ammo.

That’s all from the 6th Ed book not the 8th Ed one. The 8th Ed WE book came out right at the end of the edition ( IIRC it was the last one before End Times) so for the vast majority of 8th the 6th Ed book was the one in use and what people would have been discussing online.

All in all I think Wood Elves got a reliability boost because S4 short range was not a factionwide rule. Armour piercing for all is generally better.
8th added units that filled gaps in the Wood Elf roster, yet kept a reasonable application of firepower. Asrai don't have trouble winning, so long as you understand that you cant just win by lining up longbowmen and expecting everyone else to behave in and share the fate of the French at Agincourt.
Few armies can win in the shooting phase, those few are the reason why feasible shooting armies are known as gun lines, not bow lines.

So the reason I ask is that I've been having a great deal of difficulty winning matches. My brother, our friend and I have all started 8th edition recently. I play as Wood Elves against Lizardmen and Dwarfs, both of which have proven challenging opponents. They are both gifted with incredible leadership and staying power; even when I feel like I out-manoeuvre my opponents, they seldom break and with my low Elven toughness, I do not want to get into a slobber knocker fight trading blows with them. Does anybody have any tips to help me out? The Dwarfs especially confound me; I think my only wins against them have been due to the purple Purple Sun of Xereus, but it feels lame to rely on Death magic every game.

A little more detail would be a great help. In particular, could you please answer:
- How many points are you playing?
- What sorts of lists are you all running? Any standout units in your opponents lists?
- What sort of mentality does everyone have in terms of competitiveness?
- Is buying new models an option or would you prefer to work with what you have?
Wood Elves are an old favourite and they can be extremely potent, but they need a very different mindset to most armies and don't play the same kind of games. Especially compared to Dwarfs and Lizards, which are pretty much the extreme opposite in style.

Last game we were playing 2,100 points which was pretty standard for us. We play friendly games, I don't think anyone really knows the "meta" of tournaments or how to optimize, which is why I don't like to use purple sun often. I have recently gotten a 3D printer and have been printing some glade riders (not yet painted), so acquiring new units is totally an option.
This is the list I ran against dwarfs. It actually scraped together a victory due to purple sun, but my Treekin were not the anchor I was hoping for in my army. They broke and I nearly lost.
Lord:
Spellweaver Lvl 4 wizard (Lore of Death ) -Acorn of Ages, Asrai Longbow
Heroes:
Glade Captain - BSB, Dragonbane Gem, Shield
Waystalker
Core:
Dryads x31 -Champion
Glade Guard x 11 - Arcane Bodkins
Special:
Treekin x16 -Champion
Wildwood Rangers x22 -Champion, Muscian, Standard Bearer
Rare:
None
This was a melee-orientated build, designed to trade with dwarfs and as they lined up to receive my charges, hit them with a purple sun. I know, no cavalry, and barely any archers, I was trying something different. My wildwood rangers crashed into his elite infantry with gromril armour (which had been lightly peppered with arrows and their numbers thinned a little). My wildwood rangers performed pretty well, inflicted some decent damage and tied up some of his best troops. On my right flank, I had my Treekin, which got broken by two groups of Dwarf Rangers. This was nearly disastrous, as rangers closed in on me a purple sun saved my ass. Dryads held my centre decently, they pushed back a smaller group of dwarf warriors and took out a gyrocopter. But, if not for that purple sun those rangers would have folded me like a piece of paper.

Its all about denial. Waywatchers and Deepwood Scouts with Hagbane tips are your keys to victory. Lurk around the flanks of the enemy peppering them with arrows causing a constant dribble of casualties.
I can see why you rely on lucky magic, your army is made of isolated melee blobs, each with their own weakness. You need melee units but only to provide points of contact, on your terms, while your skirmishers do their job.
Use Shadows, for the hex spells or Dark magic for direct damage as priority.
