Just something for a bit of fun and pointless speculation. Let us debate fiercely but for funs sake!
What would you like to see in WFB not-9th-ed?
Myself I only have experience with 8th, and asides from tuning down the units numbers and deathstar effects I think it's pretty good!
I'd like to see the magic system tweaked a bit, with wizard levels being a bit more meaningful. For example spell selection not random, but choose from wizard level + 2 on the spell rankings. So a lvl 1 wizard picks one spell from four options (the basic spell through to spell #3)

Every faction touched on that never got an official army release.
As far as rules? Templates, slots instead of percentages, Psychology mattering, and most assuredly some affordable boxed sets.
I'd also love a plastic Reaper Bolt Thrower...

The starter set to have two actually playable sized armies and the armies to be reasonably good against each other
i.e. not "here is what you have, you now need about three times as much to actually make the rules work, expect it to be janky until you do"
less dice rolling for the sake of dice rolling would be nice too, for example seriously cut back on "oh just re-roll it" lazy mechanics and random tables for stuff like magic that either win you the game or lose your the game
oh and one huge one, no laser guided cannons

From my experience of the game the rules don't matter that much, it's how well-written and presented the books are that shapes how much you like the game. So I'd like to see well-organised books, preferably in black-and-white, with an emphasis on flavourful mechanics rather than elegant or impactful ones.
Also, it wouldn't be Warhammer without lots of 'you blow up and die' results on random tables!

based on my memories of 8th..
figure caps for units. no more "single block of 100+ bloodletter demons" making up the entire core troop fraction of the army.
that ardboys game managed to suck and blow.. though my magic heavy lizards did manage to murderize enough demons to pull a tie despite me being tabled.. and my opponent was the guy who went on to be the ardboys US national champion that year, so in retrospect i did pretty good despite how annoying that army was.(dude was pretty nice guy, despite the blatant power gaming in his list.)

Rules based on 6th/7th edition. Army Books based on 6th edition power levels. Release main rulebook and Ravening Hordes army lists at the beginning. Don't revise the main rules for 10+ years. Release new army books every 3ish months that are not overpowered and cost at most $25 each. Maintain the game in such a way that one only needs to purchase the main rulebook and an Army Book for your faction.

Yeah, that is what I would like too.
Premeasuring needs to be locked in. Cannons and Stone Throwers rules will need adjusting.
50% core, 2 unit minimum (+1 unit minimum for every 1000 points).
Infantry need to be useful. Supporting attacks for Spears and Halberds to the front. Can always attack the unit.
Magic should be powerful, but not one sided.
Army books should be balanced around the power level of late 6th early 7th.
Leadership of Wizard Lords should drop to basic level (except Slann and special characters).

^ That was a core concept of 8th and many whinged their boxes off because of it! Perhaps encouraging "large" amounts of core, but never more than 30 in a block?
I'm happy to see the model count drop down a bit, but that comes with my change in mentality of "eh okay there's a unit of 3 x 5 that looks a bit dumb, but it represents a realistic 20 guys per model!"

I would be happy with a blend of mostly 8th edition with some less swingy magic like in 6th.
One thing I could live without is the Hordes rule - while huge regiments look awesome in big games, I never liked the "build one massive block plus some chaff" that became some sort of a standard during 8th. 25 regular infantry should be considered a big regiment, with 30+ being reserved for stuff like Goblins, Skaven and minor Undead.

They "whinged" because GW was lowering model counts in the boxes while raising prices.
Boxes of 10 models at GW's current standard ain't gonna work if you need 40+ models for one unit. Scale creep is also a factor with limited table size.

- New empire & greenskin range at release
- Updates/overhauls of all outdated factions and units long-term
- Cross compatibility for relevant AoS units
- A ruleset that does not require/heavily incentivise huge blobs of expensive to buy infantry models
- A satisfyingly "tactile" experience with templates, los/charge angles, meaningful rank formations, movement and terrain rules.
- An initial command phase that allows for strategic, faction specific actions at the beginning of the battle

It's important for me that they decide what the game is trying to be.
There's nothing wrong with it trying to be like 8th, but was an intrinsically different type of game to the previous editions.
8th was less focused on tactical maneuvering and movement, which is what I liked in WFB. It tried to get people into combat faster to give them the 'fun' part of the game quicker. Which is fine if we know that's what they're going for.
IMO they should start with 6th ed as a base and work from there.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Out of all the rules editions 6th is probably the most balanced starting point. 7th showed how far you could blow that out if you weren't careful.

Looking forward to a return of Empire units and Bretonnia since I missed out on them during the AOS conversion.
I have a small collection of models that can be tweaked to be in Old World so at least I have that going for me. Which is nice.
I'll second this!

Because I hate that they added the Dragon Children into the lore because a video game wants to sell more legendary lords. Because I never saw my own culture as dominated by inhuamns Because I always wanted Cathay to be dominated by humans, only worshipping a single Dragon, and their leaders are completely made up of humans. Instead, we get this waste of an opportunity that only added the same Primarch bloat into an established faction, if Andy Hall actually had the "Cathay army book" he claims to have, in which there are not a single playable named character for Cathay that's a normal human. No, why would you need fething normal guys when you have super-powered, mary-sue/tsu, compeletly idiotic super saiyan "Dragon Children"? Of course not! That's why Cathay can go to hell.

I'm not sure if Cathay is still on the menu at this point. The game certainly seems to have been reduced in scope since the original announcements and I don't recall Cathay being mentioned in any WarCom articles for a long time. They're also not on the list of core factions, nor are they stated to be receiving a get-you-by ruleset. I can imagine people getting very irritated if Cathay gets better support than the likes of Skaven or Vampire Counts for a game deliberately limited to the Old World.
From a lore perspective, Cathay is supposed to be fighting through a revolution against the Monkey King during this time frame anyway. They have less reason to be present than many of the other factions that have been omitted from the narrative. They can certainly be wrapped up under the 'insular and inward-looking' label used for Dark Elves and Ogres of all factions.
On-topic, I'd like for infantry to be as essential as they were in 8E but without the bloated unit sizes. Ideally a standard fighting regiment should be no more than 30 models. I loathed the Horde rule, but while I disliked the implementation, didn't have many issues with Steadfast. Fighting in 2 ranks was nice but I'd be OK with the removal of Step Up provided damage was reduced in general.
Cannons really should use Ballistic Skill in some manner. Magic in general to be toned down in power but increased in options. Choosing spell lores at list creation was much appreciated over every Bretonnian army facing Metal every time.
I'd also like Elves to get a serious bonking in terms of rules. Call it 8E PTSD but when Elves start winning grinding matches against Orcs because their WS5 S6 I5 Lions are fighting in 4 ranks for 13pts a model, I get salty. Absolutely no ASF for a faction trait, that's exactly what I5 is supposed to do. If Elves needed rerolls (they don't) then they should have been given their own rule instead of ruining ASF as a USR. Dark Elves shouldn't be rerolling Wounds just because. Elves are blessed with high movement, good shooting and excellent magic; they should absolutely require using them to win instead of facerolling you with a billion Mindrazor attacks.
