I'm not one that normally has to ask a question like this, but does anyone remember what size of square base tomb scorpions came on?

According to eefl forums base chart it had 40*40 base.

I think they were actually 50x50. In the 6th edition army book they're definitely bigger than the tomb swarms, and the same size as bone giants - you can see this on the colour page inside the cover and more clearly on page 58.

It would be pretty unusual for their base size to have decreased in 8th edition, though, and the 'Plastic Krak' document herjan1987 quoted is as far as I've previously seen accurate for 8th edition.

Well, since I play 6th I'll lean on 50x50. Thanks.

What matters is how big are your scorpions.

If you don't have any already I suggest this web page. 9th Age Sand Scorpions and WHFB Tomb Scorpions are one and the same thing.

https://www.the-ninth-age.com/community/lexicon/index.php?entry/1562-miniatures-sand-scorpion/

I personally would not use a square base, unless you intend to 'tuck' in the scorpion. If you need to use a 60x40mm or 75x50mm base to fit your scorpion comfortably, use that. The correct frontage is what hatters most.

I would personally recommend the Papo Scorpion 50209. The body and legs will fit on a 75x50mm base with modest overhang for the pedipalps and tail, comparable to that of a lot of monsterous models, it is dirt cheap, decent quality, durable and it comes painted.
It doesn't have a mummy interred in it, but to me that is a plus.

Scheich has a scorpion that is about the right size for $6 US each. That's what I plan on using.

Which scorpion is that?

The only one I could initially find was the lava scorpion. A google search for Schleich 70142 Lava Scorpion found no other. It looks cool though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOIxJMy8rDk

It is a tad big, but might do as a Warsphinx, I might get one for D&D.

I had to go to Schleich own website to find the other one. Here is the Schleich 14857 Emperor Scorpion, which is what I presume you are looking for.

https://www.schleich-s.com/en/GB/wild-life/products/emperor-scorpion-14857.html

It will NOT fit on a 50x50mm base, let alone a 40x40mm. I think you will still need a 75x50mm to fit it properly.

It is fine as an educational toy, but I think Papo do a better scorpion for purpose, the Emperor Scorpion looks a little 'blunt' and rubbery. There is a third Schleich scorpion but that is a deleted line.

Papo Scorpion 50209 will at most need a sharpened or replaced sting, you can use a rose thorn preserved varnish for that. The rest looks suitably fine for purpose. Also the Papo scorpion looks a lot better as a desert scorpion, as it is very reminiscent of Androctonus, wheras the Emperor scorpion is a 'jungle' scorpion. Of course that will not matter directly for wargaming in the Warhammer World but Emperor scorpions are recognisable, and it might look a little out of place even - or maybe because of - if it gets a colour change.

And for the record desert fat tailed scorpions are way more hardcore than Emperor scorpions. The latter is a common enough pet, the former is not far off the top of the surprising short list of animals with medically significant venom. Any discerning chad Pharoah will prefer the Androctonus Australis to Panidus Imperator made big by magick and recruited into his armies. Think of your Pharoah's reputation, get him a quality scorpion.

Those are Schleich 14857 Emperor Scorpion.

According to Schleich website they are 7.4 x 6.4 x 3.4 cm. The 3.4 is the height, the 6.4cm for the width is the most problematic aspect. The length of 7.4cm can be taken care of with overhanging tail and pedipalps. Next time you are at this store bring a 50x50 with you, maybe you will be able to repose the legs and fix this.

The Papo Scorpion 50209 is also big but more conveniently shaped, it is taller and less wide. 8.5cm length, 5cm wide and 5.5 cm tall. Also the maximum width is at the pedipalps, so the legs should all fit on a 50x50, though a 75x50 or chariot base will fit the model more comfortably

Domain-specific expectations are hilarious. $6 for a wargame monster model? What a bargain!

But when talking about toys Schleich is the expensive, high-quality option that can survive decades of abuse (though all those arthropod limbs look like they'd come off if a 6-yo chewed them for a while).

I made a fantasy naval wargame using 28mm cogs and various sea monsters which are educational toys on flight stands. My megalodon, mosasaur and kraken averaged £15 each, but are very big. I was expecting to have to repaint the toys, as it happened I only needed to clean up the gum line which had a dab or two of white paint on it. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality in terms of material and colour, had IO painted them myself I would have been happy with the quality and I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my own painting.

There is a lot of mileage in educational toys for miniature role players and wargamers.

I bought five of those for my Necromunda campaign as critters. Tarantula giant spiders from Schleich are great too. Pretty sure the old TK scorpion was at least on a 50mm base.

Also look for toys from Safari, Mojo and Papo.

I have yet to buy any Schleich as of yet, though I am eyeing up the Schleich 14753 Asian elephant, as it looks like it will just fit a chariot base. I want one for my Kingdoms of Men mammoth, and I think an actual wooly mammoth doesn't suit the faction as well as a war elephant does.
I have also heard nice things about Schleich dinosaurs, but I went with other manufacturers for my sea monsters.
