So this is just a theory and will likely be wrong and we shall find out soon when next Seige of Terra book releases.

But its my working theory of the truth behind what really happened. Becuase it's always bothered me that The emporer let Horus beat him up for hopes he would redeem himself before finally killing him with a thanos click.

I think this is propoganda to put the blame on Horus.

The truth I think its Sanguinius sucummbed to the black rage. The fight was hard fought between Horus and Sanguinius. But as the angl himself was finally at the moment of his premenition he started seeing all the different outcomes flood into his head. Just like in Ruinstorm. This bombardment causes him to go into the black rage. This black rage so physically powerful, enhanced by the emporers presence and all round chaos shenanigans happening on the the ship causes the black rage from the angel to echo through space and time which is where his sons then get the black rage. From that exact moment right there and then.

After a hard fought battle Sanguinius strikes down Horus but doesn't stop. He turns on his father, visions of Horus still in his sight. The emporer, this is where he sustains his mortal injuries. Unwilling to fight his loyal son. Trying to break him free, sustaining injury after injury. The emporer forced to fight back kills the angel.

This sends him into his own depression which is why he was very defeatest and such when he had his psychic talk with Bobby G in current setting. This confrontation essentially caused him to lose all hope. Just before he fell unconcious, seeing his two dead sons before him, slain by him. He clicks and ensures Horus soul dies and Sanguinius' soul survives. This soul fragment will eventually find it's way to become an echo in the form of the Sanguinor.

This is a cool theory.

Probably won't be true.

The emperor hasent been shown to emotionally care about his sons. Tacticaly he cares about them. But if any one of them attacked and hurt him he would kill them with little hesitation as he cares for humanity's future and his own and often thought of his sons as tools.

I think it may be that sanguinus injures horus leading to the emperors victory. And I think they will portray horus swollen with caos as the stronger of the 2. As this increases drama. It may be that emperor and sanguinius fight horus 2 on one. It may be that hours is still winning both of them. Then upon sanguinius loosing it horuse feels bad and then when he has to kill sanguinus he is distracted by fealing this is when the battered yet cold as ice emperor makes his move killing him and destroying his sole.

I think people confuse the emperor with a superhero. While is is superpowerfull he has not been shown to be a good person in the tradional sense. The emperor is cold calculated and self-serving. He helps humanity becuse it helps himself. And while I do think he cares for humanity as a whole. I don't think his motivations are pure of heart.

Spelling is terrible sorry on mobel and can't fix it right now.

That would be a massive retcon from the previous version of the story from WD131. But these HH books never shy away from ruining a good tale.

Nice story but the bit I don’t buy is that the emperor won’t attack sanguinius. The man is bad and if sanguinius attacked him he would either think chaos had got him or just struck him down to save his own skin. I prefer the idea that the emperor was going to joint sanguinius in the fight but saw him go into the black rage and thought “another disappointment” so left him to be killed by Horus and wear him down in the process. This still stays true to the old story that sanguinius knew he would die but damage Horus’s armour so that big E could win

I think the black rage part might be true. Sanguinius falls in body and spirit at the final moment.

More likely is that Sanguinius will strike Horus the same place Leman Russ struck him. Which will be the same place the cursed blade first struck Horus and will be the final place he is stricken by the emperor. For all that warp trickery symbiology.

The Abnett version of events also needs to incorporate some of his OG side characters, like the whole carnival of Perpetuals and their various magic and super-magic knifes, as well as another character that literally arrived on the Vengeful spirit by mysterious means™ at the eleventh hour...

Well, it is a fantasy series; even if it is dressed up in a spacesuit. Magical knives and eleventh hour appearances are all part and parcel in these stories. And the trope of the point of weakness is also quite popular in fantasy and old stories. Talos, Achilles and Siegfried just to name a few. And on top of that the tropes used for warp magic; repetition and symbolic significance and it would be pretty thematic for Horus' wound to stretch forward and back in time. The beginning and the end of Horus' downfall.
