HQ
Primaris Lieutenant - 75pts
- Power Sword - 0pts? (listed on data-sheet but not points values section)

Troops #1
6 x Intercessor Squad - 120pts

Troops #2
8 x Tactical Squad - 144pts
- Segreant - Powerfist +10pts

Elites #1
Contemptor Dreadnought - 150pts
- Kheres-pattern assault cannon - 0pts? (listed on data-sheet but not points values section)

TOTAL: 499pts

This is my first try at making an army. I already bought the Contemptor Dreadnought and the Tactical Squad (without realising they were half-obsolete by the Primarus gak).

I'm not overly fussed about "making the best army possible", I care more about how they look. But I don't want it to be a tactical nightmare either.

If I enjoy this, I'll add onto it more in the future and make it 1000pts.

This article has the link to the current Munitorum Field Manual, which lists points costs.
If something does NOT have a listed points cost, it's free.

The Lt. is 65 points, all upgrades are free.
Intercessors are 18 PPM, all upgrades are free.
Tacs are 18 PPM, all upgrades are free.
Contemptor Dread is 140 points, all upgrades are free.

So currently, you're sitting at 457 points, but you can take a LOT of upgrades to make your dudes hit harder.

Maybe try something like...

HQ
65-Lieutenant

Troops
90-Five Tacticals, choice of upgrades
90-Five Tacticals, choice of upgrades
90-Five Intercessors, choice of upgrades
270

Elites
140-Contemptor

Total
475

Not much you can do other than add a body for the remaining points.

Also, word of advice! 5-man squads are generally better than 6-man, because Blast on something like a Plasma Cannon gets +50% shots on average versus a 6-man squad. Plus, MSU (multiple small units) means you get more upgrade options and Sergeants.

EDIT:
don't worry - I see now. Sorry.

I'll leave this here if you're curious:

Where are you getting those point values? Is there an updated list somewhere or ... ? ... because mine don't say that ...

Thanks ...

Question ... why are all the upgrades free all of a sudden?

That seems kind of weird to me. I enjoyed trying to "spend my points" wisely. Now I just feel spoiled and like it's not as fun. Do you know the logic behind it?

Anyway ... I'll give this another crack and repost.

Lots of people dislike it. It seems the direction GW is going in, though.

There were several threads on this.

I guess it won't matter too much if they rebalance everything for the new edition. But if it's like it is now, it seems everyone will just be "power gaming" and going for "the best stuff" ... I will hold off judgement until I see the new edition. Don't know why they did it to this one though ... like, why would I get the power sword and bolter pistol for my lieutenent when for the same price of zero points I can get the power sword, storm shield and a much better pistol? Doesn't make sense.

... with that in mind ... how about this then?

HQ

Primaris Lieutenant - 65pts
- Neo-volkite pistol, 1 master-crafted power sword and 1 storm shield

Troops #1

5 x Tactical Squad - 90pts
- Seargent: Combi-flamer, power-fist
- Troops: 1 x flamer

Troops #1
5 x Tactical Squad - 90pts

Troops #3
6 x Intercessor Squad - 108pts
- Seargent : Stalker bolt rifle, thunder hammer
- Troops : 5 x stalker bolt rifle, 1 x grenade launcher

Elites #1
Contemptor Dreadnought - 140pts
- Kheres-pattern assault cannon

TOTAL: 493pts

Recommend NOT Flamers. They're pretty poor at their intended role and even worse at other roles.
Plasma or Melta are both good options.

I'd also recommend against Stalkers on the Intercessors. They're not bad, but they're more vulnerable to damage reduction, being D2, and being Heavy they take a penalty to-hit for moving.

Also, I should've asked-what kinda chapter tactics and super doctrine were you leaning towards, if you know?

... also worries me a bit that once 10th comes out, this "crazy combination" will be just not allowed anymore.

I was more confident with my previous listing because it was very "stock standard".

I don't know, I haven't thought about it. All I know is I'll most probably make a custom successor chapter ... I was kind of thinking of having the intercessors hang back a bit and just annoy people from range while the tactical squads go in and mop-up close range. Probably prefer to do that the other way around, but the tactical unit doesn't have as good long range options.

P.S. thanks for the tip r.e. the flamer, but I don't care that much if it's "the best". I just thought they're bad-ass and I don't know what a "melta" even means. Sounds like the same thing.

Do you already have your models built?

If yes, then play with what you got.
If no, then maybe wait to add weapons until 10th drops and you see what's good and what's not so good. If we're lucky, it'll all be viable, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Notably, I don't think anything in that list would be ILLEGAL-they're all models GW sells exactly as they are. But they might not be particularly good.

Edit: So, let me ask a broad strokes question.

Do you want to be stabby or shooty? It's best to lean into one or the other-not saying a stabby list should have no shooting, or a shooting list no melee, but it's good to focus your list.

All I have built so far is 7 tactical troops with bolters and half a dreadnought.

If I'd even known what a "Primaris" was when I bought them, I probably would have skipped the tactical troops all together as it smells like "normal space marines" are on their way out ... and it also feels weird to me having some giant space marines and then some giant-giant space marines. I wish GW just made the new space marine models the right height for 28mm standard and forgot about all this "super space marine" stuff. Anyway ...

Well don't your tactical squad come with a missle launcher? It's good enough long range

Question ... instead of making one squad of 10 marines and being limited to 1 heavy and 1 special weapon, what's to stop anyone making 2 squads of 5 marines and getting 2 heavies and 2 specials and 2 sergeants and just moving them around together as if they were one squad? ... for the same "price"?

I'm not about to do that, it seems kind of cheesey. Just wondering because it would seem like a glaring oversight in rules mechanics.

It's actually very common to do that. MSU is, for now, better in general, unless you want to buffstack a squad.

MSU is Multiple Small Units, in case you didn't know.

30k actually addresses this by making it cost less to add guys than to buy a new squad.
So a squad of 10 Marines might be 200 points, but 20 Marines in one squad is only 350 or so.
