Nerfed in 3rd when they devalued the copper piece and doubled the cost of a chicken.

I'd have wiped out the party that tried that BS.

With the annoyed surviving chickens, Legend of Zelda style.

You could do similar things with summoning spells in 3rd. I may have angered the horse gods with some creative use of the mount spell…

Sending a hoard of chickens into the final room of the tomb of horrors game would actually result in a TPK curiously enough. Assuming the party weren't all killed by standing in the wrong place when they opened the tomb, or by the chickens scratching the doors just before that bit (yes that would actually kill you), or by using the key wrong... etc

I guess you could avoid the instant kill just before that if you had a couple of chickens large enough to put a crown on though.

I think there was a give-and-take in those scenarios. Adversarial DMs who lived by the letter of the rule often got hung on it because - this may shock some of those dudes - but 3-6 people have a lot more creativity and brain power than one guy on a power trip.

So if a DM wants to play hit dice games, it's not surprising the players return the favor.

In those circumstances, wiping out the party isn't a show of integrity for the intent of the game, it's the hallmark of a sore loser.

And yes, I saw it happen. Sad.

Want a better way to do fantasy/historical miniatures battles?  Try Conqueror: Fields of Victory.

Do you like Star Wars but find the prequels and sequels disappointing?  Man of Destiny is the book series for you.

I see what you're saying. I imagine some of the games I DMed at 17 years old were done at about that level. Kids. Whatcha gonna do?

Where was I?

Ten years old and watching ET and the cartoon with the unicorn.

I've still never played DnD but my 24 year old daughter does.

I had friends at school in the 80s who played D&D in the library at lunch (I was swotting amongst the chem reference books learning how to make stuff go "woof" and "foom".). These were my high school years (81-86).

So if he ever conquered the world, I missed it.

I played *a* game of D&D with friends. Then decided I didn't like it. I played other games with the same friends and we all enjoyed those more. Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia, Cyberpunk ... None of us were really into the orcs/elves tropes though.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I was adventuring or drawing up maps beyond the edges. For some reason we could never finish a module. Everyone always wanted to go off map.

We started playing in the middle school library and the next year a teacher let us eat lunch and play in her classroom. It was so popular we had to close the 'club' to new members.

The club was one of the best experiences. Great DM who worked briefly in a local game shop. Sadly the club was cancelled.

Well, in my case the club endured, I just finished school. The adult group kept going for quite a while, but it eventually wound down as all things must do.

The primary issue now is finding not just players but a time when everyone can get together. In school, everyone's on basically the same schedule. Even afterwards, people are in close contact and work schedules are subtly shifting to make room for social needs.

But once marriage and children enter the picture, gaming falls by the wayside.

I also think we were much more laid back as kids.

That happens for a lot of people. I can't really see myself returning to anything other than 1st or 3rd if the opportunity arose. For a time I dabbled in Neverwinter Nights(3.5e) persistent worlds with and without live DM's before it became corrupted into a terrible MMO.

My youngest daughter just told me she's organizing a campaign using D&D, but says it will be more about role-playing than pure combat.

The grognard in my wants to harrumph, but it's her game.
