For the love of, GW features kit bashes regularly in their media. Immediate examples that come to mind are the orks featured in one of their battle reports and the two now officialized guard regiments.

It’s the only the 40k rules writers who dislike it. Horus Heresy and Necromunda don’t have this issue.

Further, many in this thread are demonstrating that there are many definitions of kit bash and nobody is really clarifying what they mean.

We have people talking about cosmetic adjustments and others about wargear parts between kits.

Then there’s me, who thinks both definitions are a but flawed.

Kitbash to me means “combining parts that weren’t originally meant to go together”. Because simply using parts from another kit that were meant to fit together with parts in the current kit, well, that would mean using the cosmetic bits from space marine chapter packs would constitute a kit bash.

It is right there in the name, Kitbash. Putting pieces from two model kits together to create a model. A kitbash differs from a conversion in that there was no creation of new parts or cutting and reassembling of existing parts to make the model. Using green stuff to put parts together is on the line between conversion and kitbashing depending upon how much and how you use it. Small gap fill is kitbashing, but much further than that and you are converting.

GW loves conversions and kitbashes. You can see them everywhere except for in box art. They have been moving away from them being necessary to being just aesthetic as the kits & unit rules move closer and closer into alignment with each other.

Looking at some data sheets in the CSM list it appears to me that there are wargear options that aren’t reflected in the boxes.

Noise marines are probably the standouts as they can have power fists and plasma weapons aswell as other sonic weapons.

Beast men and traitor guards don’t seem to have all the options but I’ve only seen the assembled models on the GW site. I think it’s the same for cultists aswell.

Of course this might just me making do as I think the only boxes for these units come from the kill team or boarding actions range

Mmmm.....just addressing the OP here. The CSM Index (and the 9th edition CSM codex before) are an absolutely bizarre exercise in "you can kitbash "X", but not "Y". Seriously, want to kitbash that Havoc lascannon onto a CSM? Cool! It fits! But do the same for your CSM Aspiring Champion with a combi-weapon from the Chosen kit? Noooo! Even though it fits just fine, they've removed that option, despite it existing for 23 years. And you better not give any of your characters a jump pack, or give a Raptor Aspiring Champion a set of Lightning claws (despite those being in the Raptors kit).

No, the CSM Index shows absolutely no bent towards kitbashing being "OK" by gw's standards. Just the "correct" kitbashes.

Great, so what happened to my Aspiring Champs with Combi-Weapons?

The same thing that happened just about everyone with combi-weapons. He got screwed by an edition trying to minimize most of the "elemental" attacks (instead of fire, ice, water, lightning think Melta, Flamer, Plasma, Grav)

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.
