So sometimes a Character will join a unit Eg, Dwarf King And Shieldbearers join a unit of Long Beards (Both are Heavy Infantry Unit Type)

The Character takes a position on the fighting rank.

His Base size is 50mm by 50mm, and the long beards are in Ranks of 5 (Heavy Infantry Require 4 Models in a rank for bonus)
They are arranged as shown below - does the unit get a rank bonus for the 2nd row?

Technically the Shieldbearer model is on both ranks, so there are 4 models on the Rank 2, do they get a bonus for that?

I have tried to find clarification on characters that occupy multiple ranks but I can't find any?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes you'll get a rank and you technically could have a 4 frontage with only 2 guys in the front most rank and your hero in front and 2nd.

I could give it another look later just to be sure though.

well now I have another issue...

This line says that only the back line can have fewer models in its rank, although it isn't specifically talking about characters.

so is that formation even allowed?

The conclusion is I have to place him to the side, so no he doesn't contribute to the rank bonus.
Fits the "does not fit neatly into the unit rule"

But the model does fit neatly into the unit, so it would displace the same way as the wolf rider displaces in Unit A.

The base size of the Shieldbearers is a multiple of the Longbeards base size, so per the original diagram, it does fit neatly into the unit.

You are not allowed to put fewer models on the front/middle rows than on the back, that's why it isn't allowed, the fact the base is a multiple changes nothing unfortunately

They use the term MODELS.

There are 4 models on the front row 4 on the 2nd and 5 on the back.

If it was only 2 ranks deep it would be fine but it isn't.

nope because there are the same number of models in each rank on unit A except the last rank which has less.
5 in rank 1, 2 and 3 and 3 models in rank 4

Actually, I think this may have been overlooked by GW I was looking at my old copy of 8Th edition Fantasy core rules and it has a whole section on different-sized bases when characters join and if they contribute to rank bonus's

That isn't in the Old World Core Rules, there is close to nothing in there.

Until we find an answer (or a FAQ is released) you could add the character if you reduce the number of longbeards by one (that way all ranks have 4 minis??).

ok SORTED

It is in the damned army books

Shield bearer

Relique

this is the information/rules I was looking for regarding models with bases wider than 25mm. They have moved it from the core rules to the army books

because they count as multiple models it solves a lot of issues
