Hi all,

I'm beginning my slow build for Warhammer the Old World. I have a question or two about 'counts as' minis for most people. I play other wargames, and in most cases, most people I play are not of the prefect WYSIWYG or GW models only situation. I won't be playing in tournaments (most likely), so I'm not super concerned about that. I'm also not trying to cheese, so ignore that.

First situation.

I have ten that will be in my Bretonnian Exiles List. What would you 'count' these guys as? Empire Archers? the Bandit unit? Squires? Trying to have their counts as make sense for the unit and its appearance.

Secondly, would you be okay if the miniatures (like knights) aren't the same stylistically (I have a ton of Byzantine style knights from Fireforge or similar that are the exact same size, have the same weapons, and will have the same bases). Do I mix them into the regular Knight units? Do I make their own unit and count them as Grail knights? I'm curious as to your thoughts within the realm of being both as inclusive as possible without being cheesy or ridiculous (no that rhino is not a gladiator for the 10th game).

There is not this idea.

They seem like they would work well for bandits or squires.

I'd be perfectly fine the fireforge knights mixed in, they clearly read as knights, so there wouldn't be any uncertainty.

What's acceptable as Counts-As is really dependent on your local group.

However, all of the options you mention seem acceptable. I think any Old World player would be pleased to see classic Dogs of War figures incorporated into an army

Generally, folks are accepting of Counts-As if they are:

-armed, armored and sized the same as the unit they are representing.

- distinct from other units. As in, don't have the same type of figure representing 2 different kinds of units.

You'll get even more acceptance if you units are:

-On the same size bases

-of the same type of unit: knights for knights, bowmen for bowmen, etc ...

-painted in a way that thematically fits your army.

Good luck!

Just double checked my Arcane Journal for the Bretonnian list - I don't see a standard crossbow entry. I can take mercenaries which would include Empire Archers and Crossbowmen, I can use them as the brigands or I suppose I could even use them as counts as dwarf quarrellers or something to represent them being tougher due to the shields and whatnot. I don't have the Forces of Fantasy (because I didn't realize that I needed to buy three books eek) so I'll have to wait for that to get here to check in there.

Seems self explanatory: If you field human crossbow minis, & there's rules for that in your list, then use the stats for human crossbows.

Border Prince Brigands are the best bet for you. Second best bet is allied Crossbowmen but note that that requires you to fulfill all army requirements of an Empire army (would need a hero and 25% of your allied army's points must be spent on core - which State Missile Troops happily are)

My appologies CCS - I meant to write Empire Militia, not crossbowmen. I'm going to go as Border Prince Brigands I think at this point.

I added in 10 of the Gallia Miniatures Crossbow men to make a real 20 man unit and I'm pretty happy with how they look now. I'll be adding that squad to my ICs hobby progress challenge this year!
