When does a character becomes a unit on there own.
Firewarriors with Ethereal are in combat with 10 gaurds and 1 lemanruss tank
GG FFFFFF E
GGGG TTT
The gaurds kills the firewarriors the tank did not fight yet
The Ethereal is now 3 inch away from the tank. is it still in combat
or is he now free because he his no longer in engagment range.
I would say the Ethereal is still in combat

In combat for what purpose?
If you are asking who gets to fight, then it depends who charged. Neither the tank nor the ethereal are in engagement range, but if either of them made a charge move then that unit is eligible to be selected to pile in and fight.
I guess someone could try to argue that the ethereal is part of a new unit and is technically not the same unit that made the charge move, but I am pretty confident that is not the intention. Then again, it would probably be in the ethereal's best interest not to try hitting the tank with his stick since that would allow it to fight back.
If you are asking for some other purpose then it depends on what you are trying to do. If you have an ability that only affects units that are not in engagement range then it can be used.

The rules on 'persisting effects' suggest otherwise, as does common sense.
I'm also pretty sure that units that are eligible to fight don't have the option not to, so if the Fire Warriors and Ethereal charged, that Ethereal is still going to try to bonk the tank with his stick (or move towards the Guardsmen if possible). The counter: if the Guardsman and Russ charged, and the Guardsmen wiped out the Fire Warriors, the Russ will still get a chance to pile in and fight.

Upon finishing their attack, the Ethereal is no longer in Engagement Range of an enemy unit. Full Stop.
As others have noted, this has no impact on the eligibility of any charging unit being selected to Fight. However, if the Firewarrior unit had already fought, than that remains true for the Ethereal.

The gaurdsmen did charge, the tank was already in combat, where can i find the rules for a ongoing fight, i remember that i read that effects from characters will end after the fightfase is done so characters that had a bodygaurd unit could benefit from buffs given to that unit by that character but i can find it enymore

Given the Guardsmen are the only charging unit in this scenario, if the Ethereal is not in Engagement Range of neither the Guardsmen nor the Leman Russ after that fight is resolved, then neither the Ethereal nor the Leman Russ will be eligible to fight that Fight phase. This is because each time you or your opponent selects a unit to fight, it must be either a unit that charged in the prior Charge phase or a unit that is in Engagement Range of an enemy unit.
As for when Leader abilities stop working, see the Rules Commentary document. FWIW, the answer is that Leader abilities stops working once the attacking unit resolves all its attacks from fighting or shooting.
