When AoD came out I really went for the old Mk 3 armour in a big way - they seemed to define the Heresy aesthetic. And the SoH look cool in their green and black scheme. I built quite a few Mk 3 dudes before inevitably being distracted by another shiny thing and setting them aside. While waiting for a couple of eBay deliveries to finish my Ultramarines, I pulled out my SoH and realised they were basically ready to paint. The weather is cool and dry and the wife is away - perfect priming conditions. So they got primed and (during a rewatch of MIB I and MIB II) I added a thin base of black to ‘seal’ the primer and started on the bases. So, as another excuse for a thread, here they are (starting with the HQ models and Elites). There is obviously a lot of black at this stage, but hopefully that will change reasonably quickly.

Here are the Troops units and their armoured support. I may get them a third Predator.

I love that color... nobody else rocks it like the Sons of Horus.

Great start, I look forward to the rest... are you going to make Horus, or little Horus or both?

No, I am keeping these guys fairly basic. The theme is that it's a SoH army that is only just beginning to 'turn'. There are a few signs of what is to come (mostly on the Cataphractii Praetor), but they are otherwise just a bunch of battle-hardened dudes.

I have finished cleaning up and priming the vehicles (a lot of work as the Rhino hull needs so much filling and sanding), and done some more painting. Here is what they look like. I realise they are a bit patchy, because I tend to apply the base colour initially to potential problem areas (especially areas that have been filled and sanded), so I can fix them before painting the rest of the model. Having built and primed several of them, I think the most troublesome part of the Deimos Rhino is the exhausts, which require a lot of work.

Here is a SoH Chaplain. He was originally a champion, but the massive sword never looked right so he got remodelled. The painting is still WiP, and my gold has dried up so I haven’t done the trim yet, but this is basically going to be the look of my SoH. I realise that the surface of the paint has ended up slightly chalky - the camera has exaggerated this, but it is also a result of having been re-sprayed. I can live with this, as the whole army is going to be gritty looking.

I’ve finally finished converting my SoH Veteran squad. A major points sink, I know, but I wanted a unit of hard-arses to give my SoH a bit of focus. The most difficult aspects were building 5 identical combi-volkites and making 2 right-handed Mk3 power fists.
