Let GW do what they want, and soon we're gonna end up playing 40K skirmish games with miniatures the size of the JoyToy action figures.

There was a Necromunda game with 12" action figures IIRC, helped lead into Inquisitor

There's only so much reaching a human can do and I think we've already surpassed it with titans. I'm thinking of the images of people with at conventions playing games with the larger titans having to move them across the floor.

I don't think anything bigger than a Knight will see any serious tabletop usage due to practicality, but I can see companies like GW introducing more stuff creeping up to there.

The Super-Primo-Mega-Primaris marines will presumably be dreadnaught sized.

For all of the other games, I don't think it's going to be an issue because the figures largely scale to the game. Rank and file games going down to 2mm (which is silly) and skirmish going up to 72mm (which is great for painting).

I have zero interest in it, but I have no problem understanding why some folks would go 2mm for rank and flank games and I wouldn't call it silly. It's actually a very good scale choice for representing large historical engagements, at a 1:1 ratio (models to men historically involved) on a reasonably sized table.

72mm seems silly at first given the massive investment in terrain that would likely be required. However, occasionally a member of the club and I will kick around the idea of gaming with 3.75" (90mm'ish to the eye) action figures, so I'm not entirely against the concept.

Armorcast made a Titan scaled BattleTech game that a FLGS used to take to conventions to play because you couldn't play it in the shop due to its ridiculous size.

GW realised that they messed up when they stopped producing 54mm Inq.

Ever since then they have been slowly scaling their models upwards hoping you all wouldn't notice...

I welcome our 54mm Warhammer 40K future........

I wonder what effect 3D printing will have. You can fight the scale creep, by printing your stuff smaller, or accelerate it by embiggening your toys.

Sort of.
Armorcast made 1/56 Licensed Battletech Mechs for some time and some folks used them to play large-scale Battletech at conventions. AFAIK, Armorcast never published any rules. Around the same time they were making large scale kits for GW before GW opened Forge World to do it themselves.

I don't own any of the armorcast models (though my club mate has some and various 1/56 Battletech resin kits) but I run big 1/56'ish Mech games at conventions using the "mech attack" rules and whatever big mech models and converted toys I can find. It does take a big table, but it's a ton of fun.

Maybe silly was a bit flippant. I had some 2mm ancients and whilst it was cool to be able to store entire armies in a matchbox, the figures were so small you were virtually playing with tokens. Anything smaller than a chariot was just a blob. 6mm seems to be a better trade off between scale and detail.

6mm is a good compromise. If I had an interest in historical ancients, 6mm would be extremely attractive.

It's all moot for me though as I'm committed to glorious 28mm with a sideline in 10mm for Sci-fi Ground (espeically Mech) Combat. Additionally, I'm entirely in fantasy and Sci-Fi (and the more pulpy end of both) so ground scale, miniature ratio and such don't really figure into it.

This guy was able to make 1:1 work.

But thanks to IRL scale creep his 1:1 army is now more of a 9:10 scale.

Yeah, and 2200 years later they're still stuck in the first Deployment phase.

Yeah, looks like the emperor deployed his side, but his opponent never showed up.

GW says your army has to be at least 3 colors to be battle ready.

They were IIRC but they faded. He should have sprung for a sealer.

I checked, they weren't properly based. If they can't build their army to the basic level, why should I have to.

Oh, and I need help moving my Knight model... it's in Spain.
