Looking at trying to do a small 'knights errant' task force and trying to figure out the practicalities.

I haven't played horus heresy 2.0 (though I have played the first version and the editions of 40k it was based on).

Narratively, blackshields with 'in disgrace all are equal' and 'pride is our armour' jump out at me. I can field an army entirely of veteran squads (with line), without needing either troops or HQ.

Would that work? If so does anyone have any advice on how to build/use it? The fact they're relentless makes massed Nemesis bolter look interesting but they are damned expensive...

Equally, does anyone know if there's a source for shoulder pads with Malcador's sigil on it?

I can't help you on a list, as I'm trying to make a Blackshields list based around Endryd Haar, the Riven Hound... and I don't have enough knowledge to help you (or myself, for that matter).

I see inquisition symbols but not malcador. What are they called?

It depends on your definition of "work".

Will it be a fun project? Absolutely and it'll be an interesting army to play against.

Will you win games? Hard to tell with Blackshields since they buck the usual trends in a lot of cases.

Work? The setup probably not as well as you'd might like. Vets are in a wierd place rules and equipment wise.
Also removing access to HQ is an actual drawback not an improvement.
If you need a small HQ the optiate is still an option.
Also you lose out on consuls that way which are a greater narrative tool overall.

Then there's the issues of the Blackshields rules needing a cleanup.
