Guards of Traitor's Toil is a forthcoming miniatures skirmish game by Grey for Now Games. Players will be watch captains commanding a patrol of town watch. Players will need to cooperate since if crime or unrest becomes too great, all players lose, but at the same time you want the glory and promotions that go to the best watch captain.

Those of you who follow the Wargames Atlantic Thread will know that WGA is producing the miniatures, both the Watch and the civilians (some of whom will be Suspects), so one will be able to customize your collection. Personally, I am looking forward to the civilians; can easily provide the guards from my existing collection, but have maybe ten civvies at best. {And not from the same time periods either ...}

The .PDF is short, and only covers basic game play in a general way, and does not include any of the campaign aspects, which is the part that I am most interested in. While it is free, you'll need to "Buy" it through the webstore. Once you do, you'll be sent a download link.

This is the first game I've been excited about for a while, and from the preview it looks like exactly the experience I was hoping for. 0200 hours and Test of Honour are great games but this theme is more to my taste.

Time to start building a city!

Was asked about the mechanics on Boardgame Geek, so I may as well c&p my reply here.

It has bespoke d6s. The symbols explained were Swords, Silver coins, Feet. Swords are what is needed to hit (Three being the average target number), and govern movement direction. Feet are a movement bonus, and Silver coins control a mechanism called 'coin effects' where one can get special actions. Three coins (of any type) give that figure an extra action. Gold coins, which are a possible reward, are in the player's treasury and can be spent as needed. Bribery is part of the game. "How do you know a cop is honest? He stays bought."

The game has a chit activation system with four types of chits. Guard Actions, Suspect Actions, Plot (which causes crimes or other events to occur), and Time which moves Civilians and ends the turn when the last Time chit is pulled, even if not all figures have moved yet.

When playing with 2 or more players, one only has five figures in the patrol, but solo players get more (how many more was not mentioned).

So mechanically, it does not seem difficult. I do dislike bespoke dice though, but it will not be a deal-breaker.

You do have to fill out everything on that form even though it is irrelevant. Check if you are missing something.

Brave of them to go with bespoke dice, a big barrier to entry for a fringe product.

Activation sounds pretty interesting tho, an interesting way to simulate a "scene"

It seems pretty obvious to me this was the intent.

Ankh Morpork is very much the inspiration, although Graham has developed his own setting . I think a fair proportion of players will be setting it in Ankh Morpork regardless.

Their other games Test of Honour and 0200 Hours both use their own dice - all 3 games have pretty similar resolution mechanics which work well.

Your game, your setting. So will you be making a Corporal Nobby Nobbs and Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler for your city?

I am absolutely making a civilian who is selling sausages-inna-bun.

Sarissa Precision is doing the scenery for Guards of Traitors Toll. They also have unpainted historicals which would work. I want a water mill and tavern/inn myself, but the historical inn is huge! Already own a bunch of small cottages which will do to get started.

Looks very polished

But it's misrepresenting the bases

And not sure how I feel about Day 1 DLC

I think the expansion is a good idea, keeps the cost down, lets people play the game and only pay the extra if they really get into it [EDIT: they recommend the basic box for 1-2 players and adding the expansion box if there are 3 or 4 players)

(i'd have liked to see some basic card buildings in the set though, or a link to print some out, yes some will have better terrain already but i bet a fair few folk who buy in won't, but I guess that might interfere with Sarrissa's sales as a terrain partner)

Placed my pre-order. There was a bundle offer which had the extra dice and roster pad so I ordered it. Slight discount over buying separately and it gets the dwarf as a bonus. He's lifting a beer mug in a toast; he can join my innkeeper and his wife once I play this or Deth Wizards.

Pre-orders are up on the Wargames Atalntic site for just the minis. $39.95 a box... So, for $64 I could get the starter which included 1 full box of civilians and half a box of guards... plus the game and dice. Or I could skip the game and dice and get an extra half box of guards for $16 more...

I really want the minis but $80 is a bit high right now. And the game looks cool, but I have no one to play it with. Decisions decisions.

Now that's a great idea, game or not!

Plenty of civilians and filler for your medieval town. I can see a lot of double duty for these figures!!!

The other games look tight as well.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

have the game on pre-order, pretty much as soon as the email landed.

from the pre-coloured buildings I'm guessing buildings are blocking terrain you cannot enter. they look ok, but way too many fragile bits to transport.

printer currently chewing through the "Ulvheim" building range.. slowly.. to have some by the time this lands.

the custom dice are annoying but do actually work well in 0200 hours and test of honour, plus you seldom actually need all that many in the other games

if we don't get an expansion with rules that allow a troll sergeant etc I'll be disappointed

figures look nice too, pain will be painting enough quickly enough to get it on the table

(still have a lot from 0200 hours to paint)

Thanks for the link.

You will want to read the rules before building any Guards or Civilians. For the guards, you'll want to know your equipment options, and even an empty hand has uses. For the civilians, in-game figure selection for random movement is based on what they carry or wear. Although if that's too much bother one can select based on "Class", i.e. Wizard, Cleric or Scholar for Arcane types, or anyone with a weapon for Armed types. Also if one uses the first option, a figure can fall into two or more classes. The rules have an example of a sword armed figure wearing a crown and medallion. So he could be an Armed or an "Expensive" depending on what the die roll is.

"Civilian" covers a broader category than I expected, basically anyone who is not a Guard. So throwing in any RPG minis you own will work fine since there is considerable overlap with standard D&D classes. I'll need to focus more on Workers, Performers, and "Expensive" (this covers nobles, the bürgermeister, and other wealthy folk.) Ironically, my RPG thief figures cannot be Cutpurses (a specific Suspect type) as they are not barefoot. When a Cutpurse is generated, the generating player can choose any figure with bare feet. Don't know what other identifying features are for other suspects as those will be on the cards. Similarly, there are different stats for the guards, but again, on the cards.

Still looking forward to this, and now that my WGA dual uses bases have arrived I should start painting the Reaper Bones townsfolk I purchased with this and Deth Wizards in mind.

Pre-ordered as well. Looking forward to a different type of game as I've basically been in Fallout land for years and wanting to try out some different solo/co-op things and this game's co-opeditive game play looks fun.

have had a read, need to see the cards of course but this has some lovely mechanics in there.

like I cannot solve the crime for whatever reason but if you can't solve it we are both punished so its cooperative.. to a level

printer is going now with the Ulvheim building range, then crates, barrels, market stalls etc

They just put up the assembly guide for the Guards and Villagers sets.

https://greyfornow.com/en-us/products/guards-of-traitors-toll-plastics-assembly-guide

I wish they had some of the detailed rules for what a guard squad needs to include or what the villagers need to play the game. I know it's fairly open-ended, but I imagine there are some limitations.
