Questioning Maelstrom Believer
|
Hey everyone!
I recently deleted my Facebook, so decided to join Dakka Dakka for all things Maelstrom's Edge. Been kind of nostalgic to be back on a forum site again, haha
I had such a blast playing the game and writing up my thoughts on the game, I immediately got inspired to start painting the minis I have. I started with the Remnants as they're one of my favorites. They're still WIP (and I have about 5 more to go), but thought I'd share my progress thus far! The Prime is pretty close to done. I also tried some new techniques with these and happy to see how my experiment has paid off!
Plan is to continue to update this as I make significant paint progress and post battle reports, with photos, as I play more games! Hoping to get another game in this month, so keep an eye out for that.

Welcome aboard!
I like the green/orange combo - very striking.
Also fixed your pics - the attachment system can be a bit finicky with phone photo orientation data. The large versions still display the right way up, but the generated preview can be upside down or sideways. I have updated the pics to the gallery instead, so they display the right way up. You can upload new pics on your gallery page here - https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/user/135599-PrideMinis25.html

Hey insanity! Thanks for the fix of the photos and the tip about using the gallery. I made sure to use it this time as it's time for a battle report!
https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-135599-67810_Battle%20Report%20%232.html
I played a 90 point game with the mission "Worth More Than Your Head" and wow. What an absolute blast! I tried to engage in more mechanics this time and it was really great.
The Remnant still seem really strong or I'm just terrible at making Karist lists and playing them, haha (maybe next game I'll try out the Epirian....). At least this time The Karists made it to round 3, but it was clear that once the Militus Warrior Prime obliterated the Kaddar Nova to secure a 14 point lead, there wasn't much the Karists could do. Using Minnows as cannon fodder to distract was a good choice and they're surprisingly pesky! I was also surprised just how hard it was for the MSU Karists to deal impactful damage with the Dogde and Force rules. I wanted to try more MSU this time to counter the launchers of the Remnants, but that didn't quite pan out, haha.
I was also quite pleased as I was able to get almost all models painted with base coats! Really loving the paint schemes I chose and can't wait to do some more work on the Karists as I start doing detail work on them.

Thanks, Sgt. Oddball! Maybe I should have had a bit more line of sight blocking terrain, but I still really liked the eclectic look. Good mix of homemade and 3D prints from various creators.
Still need to build up motivation to build some terrain with the terrain sprues....

Yeah it can take a bit of convincing yourself to get into it. I quite liked just making cardboard or foamboard boxes and putting a bunch of stuff from the terrain sprue on that. See my old topic here.

Sorry, real life got in the way, didn't mean to not reply! But, Sgt. Oddball, have to say, your work was some of the first ME stuff I saw and it really made me realize just how beautiful these models were. It also got me itching to build terrain again along with Insaniak's articles (I was actually looking at them again last night for more ideas, haha).
I also had a bit more time today and decided to finish some bases and a few Remnant suits
And hey, look at that! I learned how to embed an image, haha

Thank you! For entirely improvising and experimenting with the paint schemes and bases, I'm quite proud of how these are all turning out.
Back with some more and today we're adding in some completed Karists
I'm still not 100% certain I like the color choices yet, but it is growing on me from when I was first piecing it together. I do need to tighten up some of the straps on that trooper, but c'est la vie. Always improvements to be made, haha

It's time for battle #3!
https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-135599-67867_Battle%20Report%20%233.html
I played the same Remnant list for this one, but tried the mature Angel for the Karists. Was hoping having a big bruiser like that would tie up the Remnant suits and allow the Karists the ability to snag objectives.
This game was a lot closer than any of the others I played and even went to turn 4 before I called it. By then the Karists didn't have much left and the Remnants already had a 5 point lead. Will say the VIP objective was pretty fun and I liked eventually having clusters of objectives like that. Also made thr game really interesting to see the Remnant HAVE to get up close and not sit back and shoot.
I'm still struggling with how to play Karists better and not get absolutely wiped out (guess that's where the reinforcement rules would come in). This game definitely went better for the Karists, even almost took out 2 suits! I think I'll need to work on playing safer with them and use more suppression shooting. Seems throwing a few Angels in the list is doing some wonders though! Also the Inspire Zealotry ability of the Kaddar Nova is doing some work too (which reminds me,
forgot the Militus Prime's ability ) .
This time around I made a point to be better about spending command points (even saw where I missed in the rules you gain them each Command phase equal to the turn) and I think that helped. I also made sure to try to use suppression more and assess whether it was better to try to take out models or reduce effectiveness. I will say I feel like the game is starting to click for me and I'm able to make smarter choices, so that's great!
My next game might include Epirian finally...but I might keep Remnants and Karists to keep everything painted, haha. Hoping to have a fully painted Karist force end of the month, but definitely in April. My Remnants (which includes 6 Militus and 5 Nimbus suits) are mostly done at this point, besides some detail work.

Yeah, how you choose to use your command points can certainly make a huge difference!
Also worth noting that most of your LOS-blocking terrain appears to be around the edges of the table. If you move some of those bigger pieces into the middle, you may find it makes things a little harder for the Remnant suits to hold back.
As with old-school 40K, MEdge works best when you have plenty of terrain with a good mix of LOS blockers, to avoid long range shooting units from having too much freedom.

Those are some great points! I was trying out some new terrain and was thinking about how if I wanted to use this terrain again I'd want to print some higher pieces to block LoS. Also touché on keeping the LoS blocking pieces towards the edges. Guess my Infinity days still curse me, haha.
I'll be sure to have more LoS blocking pieces in my next game and keep it them more centralized. Thanks for the tips!

The paint keeps flowing!
Still on track for my goal of having a fully painted Karist force by the end of this month to have 2 fully painted ME forces. Then the goal will be to work on terrain (prime, base coats, and print more LoS blocking pieces) and start painting the Epirians!

I am by no means a tactical genius, but for the Karists maybe consider a full squad of Tempest Elites? That can have quite a scary offensive output if I remember correctly.

That is a good point. I mostly just take the 2 right now since I built the 4 I have to have 2 of each weapon type. Been wanting to get more to make fuller squads, but waiting for the full second edition and other sculpts to release first, haha.
No harm in mixing and matching the weapons though!

Back again and this time with a completed Karist force!
(rest of the photos here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-135599-67843_Karists.html)
Have to say I'm pretty proud with how these turned out. Also really happy I finished my goal of having them done by end of month. Now I'll work on finishing detail work on my Remnants and probably take a little break...hooray for moving....

Thank you! These Karists paint up quite well, so it wasn't as time consuming as I thought, haha. Also helps my paint scheme was pretty simple too.
Sgt. Oddball wrote:Always feels great, having a fully painted force
Oh yeah, it does feel really great! I haven't had a fully painted army/force for a while, so pretty good feeling for sure! Will be really nice to have two painted forces face off when I can play again...just need to paint my terrain!
I did start basing my Epirians today, so I'll hopefully have them primed soon and can start painting them. Maybe a good project for April, a fully painted Epirian force?
