im liking the look of the ballistus but the lancer is cool and similar.
any suggestion on what to grab first for someone that doesn't have anything?

Totally a question of taste. I'm liking the Vindicator or the classic dread, none of the Primaris choices really catch me.

Most marine units do what they say on the tin. If it looks like it’s good at killing tanks, it probably does an OK job at it.

How efficient it is is very point dependent, which changes at the whim of every balance sheet update.

Also what detachment you have, other units in the army, synergy buffs, etc can skew things. And everything might be upended with the next edition.

So get the model that talks to your heart. It might not be the “best” option, but it should get the job done. Chasing the optimal pick is a fool’s errand anyway, as it’s always a moving target.

Land Raider w/Lascannons. Bonus points if you can find the ol Forge World extra armor for it because it looks the nutz.

Combine with Boxnaught. Rinse and repeat!

i want to like the land raider but can never bring myself to justify it.

i want to like centurions but they seem to get a bad rap.

I have a whole gallery under creating a Kill Team of easy to paint Space Marine Chapters.

I'm working on the Knights of the Raven right now.

Both are great anti-tank options for a Space Marine force. I use both and they are both “meta picks.” I might go with a Ballistus first.

Is the Land Raider specifically competing against something? 4 Lascannons and Twin Heavy Bolters is pretty good firepower. The tank itself is pretty tough. And afaik you can still put the bonus Multimelta, Storm Bolter and Hunter Killer missile on it for even more dakka. I only played one game of 10th, but I took two of them and they didn't dissapoint.

For chapter, I always reccomend picking acolor you like and making your own chapter.
