soo i want to start a Blood Dragons Army and since there isn't that much Lore about them, i can go Black Rage with my Imagination..
I recently had the Idea to take some Draconi Miniatures from the Stormcast Eternals (Age of Sigmar) since i really like their Design and use them for my BD's. I would pimp them a little bit with a few Guns and cybernetics just like those "Cyber-Wolves" from the Space Wolves and then put some fresh looking Sanguinary Guard (without Wings?) on top of them. I have allready seen a lot of people taking some Stormcast Eternals bits for their Sanguinary Guard but i coulnd't find any 40k Dragonriders beside some Salamanders on top of Giant Lizards..
So my Question is, has anybody done this before or had the same Idea at least? And is it actually a good Idea at all or would the Dragons simply not fit into the 40k Picture or would the Marines simply look silly on Top of those Dragons? I think Lorewise it would be okay? Please share your Opinion or maybe even experience and Advice.

Marines on wolves are derpier and gw is fine with them so you should do whatever you like. You can count them as tanks, dreadnoughts or thunder wolves if you want to.

I know that when thunder wolves appeared 15 years ago, there was a spate of counts as marine cavalry and big lizards was the most common choice.

Heldrakes are the 40k version of dragons. They are Daemon Engines that fuse metal with the warp. Heretic Astartes can use them. Nobody rides them though.

Oddly enough, Vampires also exist in 40k lore, but as far as I'm aware, Games Workshop never made a usable tabletop model of a vampire. They did for Beastmen however.

The Eldar Exodites in the 2nd Edition codex (page 30) have dragon riding cavalry, so fluff wise there are certainly dragons and big enough to ride around and were tough enough to give a +3 Armor Save bonus.

The stat line is OK-ish for the dragon itself, but nowhere near as buff as the dragons ridden by the High Elves in Warhammer Armies.

Dragons are just rebranded into Tyranids. 😆 Like above said, the Eldar exodites have dragon riders like in Avatar.

Exodite Dragon Knights rode dinosaur-alikes rather than actually fantasy style dragons though.

The Path of series features Exodites on actual fantasy style dragons though, if I remember correctly. Eugh.


Marines take over maiden world, don't go all Flesh Tearers on the local wildlife, adopt dragons like the Space Wolves adopted wolves. Bingo!

Ignoring of course 8 editions worth of WHFB undead, 4 editions of Sigmar undead, numerous misc figures from back in the 80's- early 90's for RPG use (some eventually re-branded into WHFB blisters), and several Blood Angels clearly showing their fangs & wearing armor straight out of the movie Brahm Stokers Dracula....
