Subject: Mounting Vehicles on Bases?

Yesterday, I saw two armies with odd basing. One player had his Leman Russes and Rogal Dorns mounted on bases.
I was unaware that bases existed for these models. When I asked him about them. He said it made the game easier and it prevented other players from scraping their models up against his paint job when the charge into melee with hid tanks.
Is this a legal thing? I thought it made the tanks look a little more uniform, but I was unsure how these bases would fly in a tournament setting.

Its not part of the game for most vehicles.
So probably not tourney legal in most cases.
I'm also generaly against putting bases on vehicles unless it'd be necessary to make them stand on the table - like flight stands. Or assorted walkers, Tau suits, etc. I've never yet seen a Crisis/broadside able to stand on its own.
So none of my GSC vehicles or Ork buggies will ever have a base - if a Rhino doesn't need a base? Then I see no reason my Shok Dragsta would.
The two exceptions here are my Triarch Stalkers & my Soul Grinder.
I put them on 100mm(?) Rounds ages ago - to solve arguments from several opponents as to where b2b was.
The downside is that they can no longer be posed on/in terrain looking cool.
I also don't play tournaments - so the fact that my GSC & Ork car aren't on bases isn't really a concern for anyone I play with.

I wonder if there is any official documentation on this issue.

I don't see any problem with doing it if you prefer. It's probably a disadvantage if anything.

Personally I think everything should be on a base for consistency. It puts the vehicles at the same height as the rest of the models. They're currently ~5mm shorter.
Plenty of vehicles have bases. It's an inconsistency that they all don't.

But then every tank goes up in price 20 bucks.

So, it's essentially high heels for tanks.
