Hi,
Could I use the figures in the The Horus Heresy – Saturnine boxed set as Ultramarines in 40k more to build and paint than to play would they fit into the lore? was this type of armour still in use in the 40k era?

The older marks of power armor are still in use in the 40k era, but are more rare. And not necessarily fielded en mass in a single squad. You’d be more likely to see bits of relic armor incorporated into suits worn by the chapter’s veterans.
But a chapter like the Ultras would defiantly be able to field squads of the older marks if they wanted.
If you think it’s cool, go with it!
The hard part would be to get the wargear and options for the non-power armor stuff to map to things with rules in 40k. Also the scale might be off. Not sure how the satunine terminators compare to the modern 40k ones, and what gear options they have. Same with the dread.

Saturnine termies are much much larger than 40k termies, and the dread is a good bit bigger than a redemptor chassis. You cpuld maybe use it as a ballistus but the weapons dont look anythkng like what they should. Theres no melee options so it makes a redemptor or a brutalis non-viable

Non-viable only for the lazy. I assure you melee options can be crafted/printed.

I assume anyone asking the question is hoping to be able to make it work out of the box with minimal additional investment or time spent converting.

Saturnine Terminators would make fine Centurion proxies

I the hobby wasn't a crazy mess, yes absolutely, they're just a different type of terminator armor, you can certainly use them as terminators in 40k and use them in the game.
If your local area has a stick up their butt, I dunno, they might not let you do it? I'd let you do it, the hobby is supposed to be fun not "you can't use this specific kind of terminator as a terminator because its that kind of terminator" Like seriously heh.

Eh, the Saturnine have terminator in their name, but that's about the extent of the similarities. They make far more suitable Centurions.

I can make an entire Saturnine 40k force.
I have 30 of the RT era Saturnine termies.
I have the 6 Saturnine termies (hello, Centurians!) from this new box
I have the new Dread - not sure if I'll field him as some sort of dread or an armiger....

Marines have rules for a Leviathan Dread, which is not that much smaller than the Saturnine Dread, so I'd use these rules for now, of you don't want to make up your own.
For the Termis Centurions would have been my first idea as well.

Leviathan is actually quite a bit smaller, and also Legends

Nothing wrong with Legends, particularly if you're running a Saturnine. Leviathan is smaller than a Redemptor which is smaller than a Saturnine, though the weapon loadout fits the Leviathan rules better I suspect.

Bear in mind that anything not Primaris (Tactical Squad, Centurions) is on the chopping block.

We’ve been mostly talking about the actual marines. How does the big gun emplacement compare to a firestrike servo turret?

Better to play games in the here now than fret about might happen in a year+.
And whenever that day does arrive? There'll still be something to proxy them as. Hell, scale creep will eventually make a normal termie current saturnine size....

You could always use the giant Dreadnought as a proxy Armiger Knight.
