I was told that Contrast Black Templar looks better of a Wraithbone Primer than me using Black Primer.

Is this true?

I'm trying to paint a black uniform.

Depends what you are going for? Both ways will get you results, but which one is better is very subjective.

If you start with a solid black, you can leave that in the recesses, and work up layers and highlights to get a nice black look. Depending how “black” you want the end results will determine what levels of greys to go through.

If you go with a BT contrast paint, you will get a solid very dark grey just out of the pot. Is this going to be dark enough? Are the highlights going to be to light? You can always do two coats, or something like Nuln Oil on top of it.

Heavily depends on what you wanna get. It's relatively nice if you do zenithal and then contrast. It's look like black under direct hard light, but with white base coat only its looks too flat. I'm not a great painter myself but I don't like contrasts without good zenithal. Also it's look good on armor and not on cloth. All this IMHO

Pretend I have no idea what a Zenethial spray is.

I haven't painted in 15 years and my painting style is akin to a WW2 Soviet Tanker whitewashing his tank for winter combat.

Well if you want it quick go for contrast over white/light gray base coat. It gonna work nice on tabletop distace

So, yes, if you want quick and simple -

Super-speedy method:
- Spray all over with white
- Slap on a coat of Contrast (or speedy paint of choice) black.
- Profit

Zenithal method:
- Spray all over with a medium grey or purple.
- Spray from 45 degrees above the model with white.
- Slap on a coat of Contrast (or speedy paint of choice) black.
- spot/edge highlight where appropriate with white or grey.
- Profit.


An alternative zenithal method (also known in some quarters as 'Slap-Chop' is to spray with grey or purple, then give the model a heavy dry brush of white rather than a second spray coat before the Contrast layer.

I just want to get these Tempestus Aquilons on the table so I can play with them.

I was going to either go Harakoni Warhawks which is black uniform & sandy armour or Inquisitorial Stormtroopers which is black uniform & Red armor.

The Harakoni one would be easier to do with Contrast (or equivalent) than the stormtrooper scheme, as you can basecoat the model, paint on a full coat of sandy/bone colour, and then when that dries go over the uniform parts with the black, as that will cover the previous coat ok.

For the black/red, I would be doing the uniform first, then touching up the armour plates with white or a pale purple before applying the red.

Just go for contrast + some light highlights where appropriate with grey of your choice, the brighter light in your "environment" the lighter grey you want
